As this administration guts climate science & mitigation efforts in the midst of a climate emergency & opens #Alaska to more extraction - we are all left to suffer the consequences. @rick any data on amount of rainfall lately & potential impacts?

A scientist in a black jacket and brown hat with binoculars in her hands looks into the distance as emperor penguin chicks hang out in the background.

When I was on the ice w Nat Geo, we visited the emperor penguins at Atka Bay which is a colony that hops up onto the ice shelf rather than staying only on sea ice. This means that when chicks fledge they have a high-dive of a jump to reach the water. Which they do. With spectacular inelegance. πŸ§ͺπŸŒπŸ¦‘πŸ¦‰

The photo showcases an artwork titled "The Enchanted Owl." It features a stylized owl depicted in a vibrant and dynamic manner. The owl's body is colored in shades of green and yellow, with intricate dot patterns giving it texture. Its eyes are large and expressive, outlined in black. Radiating from behind the owl are long, bold feathers or rays, alternating in black and yellow, creating a striking contrast and a sense of movement or energy. These rays curve and flow around the owl, adding to the dynamic feel of the piece. The background is a simple, light beige, which helps to highlight the vivid colors and bold lines of the owl.

Upon her return home, Kenojuak continued to make art and founded the West Baffin Co-operative.
In 1958, she published her 1st print, Rabbit Eating Seaweed. In 1960, she painted her iconic work The Enchanted Owl, which became a stamp in 1970.

From 19th century battlefield relic to 20th century promotional item: The rise and fall of a forgotten oddity, bullet pencils The pencils started as high-utility writing utensils but became a popular souvenir and marketing tool, eventually reaching Alaska.

There once was an object called a bullet pencil, common and known by nearly everyone, even to Alaska. Then they disappeared. My latest article:

She's a female grey wolf who disappeared in 2003. Why is Wolf 57 capturing researchers' attention? Eighteen years after she disappeared, her collar was found hundreds of kilometres away. Here's why she deserves your attention.

Some nice news this morning: my Cottage Life feature on Banff's long lost Wolf 57 won gold in the nature/environment category at the IRMAs! Thanks to @alyshavdt.bsky.social for the news *and* for the assignment.

Hard to overstate how transformative Jane Goodall was as a scientist.

She took the best of the scientific method--empirical observation--and used it to push back on existing scientific orthodoxies.

A Final Message from the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS)
After nearly four decades of service to the Arctic research community, the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) has now reached its sunset. This will be our final message to the community.

On behalf of the ARCUS Board of Directors and all ARCUS staff, we want to thank you for the many years of collaboration, support, and partnership that made ARCUS possible. We have enjoyed working with this community immensely and believe that the goal of broadening participation in Arctic-focused research, education, and policy is still an important mission to achieve.

End of an era and a sad day for those that care about Arctic work done in the best ways possible. 😒 Nonetheless "… the goal of broadening participation in Arctic-focused research, education, and policy is still an important mission to achieve." #Arctic
