so wait who's braver again, someone who goes out with body armor and guns and handcuffs and batons and legal authority to kill when they get scared and infinite backup on demand

or a trans person who goes out into a world where people hate them wearing a cute dress and armed with a darling clutch

And before anyone responds β€œthat exists” my other caveat is that they need to look like normal glasses and not like I’m in a cyberpunk dystopia.

I’m not a β€œlatest and greatest” tech gadget person by any means, but if I could get smart glasses that display live captions I would buy them instantly.

the reason an MFA doesnt improve your writing is because it cant instill in you the single most important quality for a good writer to have: being an absolute weirdo who really wants to make people understand the perverse undulations of their gremlin brain

What Are Book Critics For? Hi! I have a novel coming out in August 2025 called Lessons in Magic and Disaster. It’s about a young trans woman who tries to bring her heartbroken mother...

What is book criticism, and why do we need it?

What makes book criticism good?

Should book critics just praise excellent books, or harshly criticize the books that fall short?

My latest newsletter opens a can of (book)worms.

When Twitter died I ended up on an accidental social media hiatus, and my mental health greatly improved. I’m excited we have a new place here to gather, but I’m also protecting myself this time by filtering out words and tags that get me doomscrolling. So far so good.

Interstellar Megachef has been on my list for ages. Hopefully I can get around to it this holiday break!

The existence of trans and queer people is not inappropriate for any age to know about

Just a random and totally not self-serving reminder that middle grade and young adult books are often fun reads, and quick reads, and not forbidden to you just because you grew up! If a book where the protagonist is a kid sounds like fun, give it a look! Ain't no shame in it!

Writing is an act of rebellion.
Writing is an act of creation.
Writing is an act of salvation.
Writing is an act of exploration.
Writing is an act of emotion.
Writing is an act of confession.
Writing is an act of speculation.
Writing is an act of reflection.
Keep writing.

Paying my obligatory pet tax. This is Nugget. He only has half a brain cell, but is so good at cuddling.
