I cannot help but think of families dropping daughters to school at St Brendan's GNS in the Glen β€” the same distance from the military base in Cork as the primary school in Minab.

The people killed in the US/Israeli bombing of the school is now counted at 148, mostly girls between 7–12 years old.

Those 100 or so children that were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Iran. They all had names. They had parents, siblings and perhaps pets. They had best friends. They had dreams, frustrations and anxieties. They had moments of utter happiness. And each of them was someone else's everything.

Golden sunset over Downhill Beach, looking west towards County Donegal. The sun sits low on the horizon behind a dark, rolling headland, casting a vivid golden glow across the sky. Heavy, textured clouds hang overhead, their undersides lit amber and gold. Wet sand in the foreground mirrors the light in long, rippled reflections, while waves roll in from the right, catching flashes of sunlight along their crests. The overall mood is dramatic and luminous, with strong contrasts between shadowed clouds and the glowing horizon.

Leave big tech behind! How to replace Amazon, Google, X, Meta, Apple – and more A handful of companies monopolise the web, with unprecedented access to our data. But there are many more ethical – and often distinctively European – alternatives

We both agree the issue is with the tech companies and lack of enforcement is the issue. I don’t see age verification as being the answer as it introduces many other problems.

26.02.2026 21:28 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s the lack of enforcement that is a key issue and having sensitive personal data of people handed to private companies only punishes the users more. Particularly when we saw major breaches recently in these companies.

The Internet is not safe for kids because the *world* is not safe for kids. But we don’t keep kids locked in sterile isolation chambers until they turn 18.

All the dangers of social media are inherent to the business models of social media. That’s the issue that needs addressing.
