Saturday's screening of La Danza de Los Mirlos will be accompanied by When Cumbia Is On, a short film by Edinburgh-based director Paz Gonzáles. It follows the journey of Peruvian Cumbia as it transcends its Latin American origins to find a new home in Scotland. 🎸

Two mountaineers undertake a clandestine expedition to Popocatépetl, one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on the planet. Faced with the inability to predict explosions, which occur very frequently, surviving or not is a matter of chance.
This screening is presented in collaboration between CinemaAttic and the Ixchel project @gcrf-ixchel.bsky.social as part of the Latin Connections Film Festival, and will feature an introduction by Charlotte Gleghorn (University of Edinburgh), Ixchel Project team member.

Daughter of the Volcano is a film that simultaneously speaks of a universal experience: that of the diaspora of adoptees all over the world. People who, driven by hope and the search for answers, never stop chasing the ghosts, literal and symbolic, of their past.
The eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985 resulted in one of Colombia's greatest tragedies. Jenifer de la Rosa was one of the children who survived and was later adopted. At 30, motivated by the possibility that her biological mother was still alive, she decided to investigate her roots.

Big Bang, which was awarded the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize for Best Short Film and won Best Auteur Short at Locarno Film Festival, is screening in Edinburgh this Saturday as part of Into the Void: Collective Dreams in Brazilian Contemporary Cinema.
In Uberlândia, Brazil, Chico earns his living repairing ovens, which he can easily get into thanks to his small size. Faced with the contempt of a system that relegants him to the ranks of the marginalised, he gradually begins to resist.

First up is Daughter of the Volcano, a documentary exploring the history of the Armero tragedy of 1985, when the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted and buried an entire town. Jenifer, a young survivor, was adopted shortly afterwards. 30 years later, she sets out to learn the truth of her origins.
