The framing around limiting the US military’s use of generative AI for domestic surveillance should unsettle the rest of the world, writes Kristina Irion. Countries seem woefully unprepared to respond to AI-enabled mass surveillance by another state.
Now this was public service broadcasting at its finest, and the stuff we all grew up on in Ireland ...
(which probably explains a lot) ☘️
I'd suspect a major driver is probably echo chambers & very toxic subcultures online that most of us only get glimpses of. We're in an age of weird algorithms and AI, often shaped by an ugly aspect of tech bro culture and a wave of incredibly toxic poltics - very obnoxious stuff is being normalised.
It’s important to see this being said, and said so clearly and bluntly by a journal that carries huge weight well beyond its readership:
My #bird identification skills are a bit iffy and I’m open to correction, but I think these are Brent Geese feeding on Garryvoe Beach in Co. Cork on #Ireland’s south coast.
The weather might be a bit unpredictable, and there’s a possibility of being soaked but worth it for the skies!

I’ve met the bees 🐝
I remember when 1024KB of RAM was considered generous. We’ll survive… somehow!
Wanted #Speirgorm Looking for a house to rent in Ennis or surrounds for my family & I. I'm working for Clare County Council and have excellent rental references available. If you hear of anything available in the coming weeks or months please let me know. Shares very appreciated! ☺️
I stick with local beekeepers. We’re very lucky to have some excellent ones around Cork.
Most EU food labelling is very clear, but this is one I’m always baffled by: “origin of coffee: non-EU / non-UK.” You often see similar on honey, unless it’s a known single supplier.
Are we just supposed to guess?
Funny how I’m always convinced my noise cancelling headphones are utterly useless… until I realise I haven't even noticed the complete chaos going on <10m away...
Pros and cons to being lost in your own bubble of blissful oblivion.
Time to crack out the pancake machine …
Platforms come and go -big accounts like sports orgs, corporates, public bodies etc need to take their followers somewhere else. There’s huge inertia and there are people who still seem to think they can push back on and against a private platform managed by algorithms and AI. Vote with your feet!
So much of it is now very ephemeral - what was written in notebooks and contained in photo albums in desk drawers and on bookshelves is now ultra securely stored in cloud accounts that often have no legacy planning, or could even just vanish if a host were ever to go bust or cease a service.
Pros and cons - important to physically own your own data, but also easy to forget just how flakey physical media could be. I remember a few HDD nightmares… also Minidisc audio nightmares, and forgetting to back up backups.
Reads like an article from a parallel universe, and one that I’m very glad Ireland escaped from!
Anyone spot a cyclist (me) knocked off her bike along the canal at drimnagh today by someone who drove away? If you got a reg I’d love the help to report them! @ibike.ie
It feels endless!!
DPD send some very optimistically and highly accurate delivery slots "between 12:08 and 13:08" they said. I'm so glad I waited in!
The planning for more extreme weather is also no where near where it should be - particularly around coping with torrential cloudburst type rainfall.
You'd feel sorry for Met Éireann - they get accused of being overly alarmist when they call a red warning, and not alarmist enough when they don't 🤷♂️
I was just clearing out some some old storage boxes and came across this blast from the past 🎧
Back when we still did things with spinning shiny rust, magnets and lasers.
I’ll be watching *anything* else. Literally anything.
He could, but it's anything but simple. More likely he'll get bored and move on.
European regulations on airline ownership are designed to prevent this kind of thing.
Good old Regulation (EC) No 1008/2008 has a lot to say about it!

Good old European Union Regulation (EC) No 1008/2008 should prevent this one from flying - EU airlines must be majority owned and controlled by EU shareholders.
The OECD has warned that the uncritical adoption of generative AI as a tool in education could inadvertently undermine the development of key human skills such as critical thinking and evaluative judgment in students
Report #1 on the impacts of non-consensual deepfake image abuse.
Sonia suffered years of panic attacks and needed counselling after photos, some dating from when she was a teenager, were edited & uploaded on an explicit site with her personal info.
She's come forward because of the Grok scandal.
Not upset that it's too cloudy to see those gorgeous Northern Lights here, why would you be looking at the sky when you've all of Kerry to be admiring
