L.A. Wildfires Live Updates: More Reported Missing as Strong Winds Fuel Fires The county sheriff said reports of missing people were rising “hour by hour” as forecasters warned that dangerous conditions could spread new fires. At least 16 people are dead.

Unconscionable: @nytimes.com reports 29+ people have been arrested in the fire zones. One man was dressed like a firefighter and had been burglarizing a home, the sheriff said.

Expect persecution of journalists and leakers, with fewer confidential sources, far less information about government malfeasance and corruption, and extreme strain on already hurting news outlets. The point is to scare, punish and bankrupt journalists and whistleblowers. Democracy will suffer.
