Just re-sharing this lovely review of last year's festival from At The Barrier.
Well worth sharing with a friend who might be considering coming to Sidmouth for the first time this summer.

Geeking out this afternoon, listening to @mattquinnmusic.bsky.social chatting to @helenlindley.bsky.social about one of the Child ballads, which may or may not feature a sentient carrot. Which had me drifting off thinking about the Aldi advertising team. Closet Child ballad fans?

I had to make weekly phone calls to my GP surgery to get a vaccine for my 91 year old Dad. He finally received it a few days before Christmas. There appears to be a lack of human resource to administer the vaccine.

Yes. Absolutely. But we have an aging population and inadequate financial support for palliative care environments.

Graphic with text stating, "Our latest survey results found that terminal patients could be forced to consider assisted dying due to support gaps," surrounded by abstract shapes in yellow and blue.
Graphic featuring statistics on assisted dying views with text over bright yellow and blue abstract shapes.
Graphic stating, "55% of those in favor of assisted dying said improving palliative care and legalising assisted dying were equally important." The text is displayed on a white background with blue abstract shapes.
Text on image states: "We're calling to improve palliative care in its 10 year plan for the NHS, regardless of how MPs vote on the End of Life Bill." The background includes blue and white design elements.
Ahead of the MPs' vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill today, our findings show that all sides of the debate place a high importance on improving palliative and end-of-life care.

I donโt think people outside the sector fully understand the extent of the impact charities make. So many charities are on the brink of extinction and there is nothing to take their place.

Iโm a serial supporter of charities. But Iโve just abandoned my one off payment to a charity because of the prolonged and tedious online payment process.
All the effort their marketing/fundraising teams took to get me there. Wasted. So important to look at the whole donor journey.

We should first invest in providing consistently good palliative and end of life care. We are living longer, so the number of people needing palliative care will increase massively in the next few years. We need to equip more people with the skills to deliver appropriate end of life care.

Yes, libraries are invaluable for their collections and public services they offer, but also social contact without the expectation to interact with anyone or spend any money is so important to so many people

Latest research from Marie Curie suggests we are going to see a 25% increase in people needing palliative care by 2043. Funding needs to be sorted as a matter of urgency.

My mum also received hospice care. It had such a profound effect on me that I became a hospice trustee for the next ten years and currently work with a palliative and end of life care charity. Itโs all woefully underfunded.
