20-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina today 😔 remembering and thinking of all those affected, along with the beautiful, resilient, and forever changed city I am privileged to now call home ⚜️
5 things emails (finally) ending with a request to "improve DoD" by providing "one idea that will improve the Department’s efficiency or root out waste"... My one-sentence idea is going to have a *lot* of semicolons...
Heartbreaking to see these wonderful NCEI datasets being decommissioned: www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume... I sent comments about the impacts of the loss of these data to ncei.info@noaa.gov and encourage anyone who uses NCEI data to do the same. 🧪
Despite everything... Mardi Gras. 💜🎷🎉👠
I don’t even know how this could be presented as being in service of anything other than hindering scientific progress.
I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...
Very efficient, Elon. 😒 (Already been waiting >10 minutes... And of course there's no public transit options 🫠)
Lol holy shit
I think it was Navy leadership in our case?? Now I'm just bracing to go through the same hell again next week though...
The cuts are coming for DoD. At least they are taking their time to review things "smartly" 🫠 www.defense.gov/News/Release...
Allhands today discussing probie layoffs. The director of my lab just broke down after a question. He's not the only one. This is simply cruel.
I think it may because I was direct hire...? Almost everyone at my agency has a 3-year probationary period (but we do have a lot of direct hires). If they let all probies go, there will only be 3/10 of my team remaining.
Great time to check in with your Fed friends and colleagues. Times are tough for all of us right now.
I have not (yet?) been fired, but I am very concerned for my colleagues who are at risk (or already gone), and the future of my career and research at my agency and elsewhere regardless of what happens.
Thankfully, I finished my 3-year probationary employee at my current agency last October, but I've been a Federal employee and a government researcher for 9 years next month. Just some context as far as who they are firing right now. 🧪
@nytimes.com "The Morning" email subject today: "Can Trump do that?" followed by some analysis about all the unconstitutional stuff he's doing.
Suggested subject fix: "Trump can't do that"
See how easy that was? Do better.
Yesterday my Division head had an allhands. He's great, and it was very professional. But reading between the lines, all I heard was "malicious compliance". 🫡
More of this, please! And by "this" I mean, "law following"
"improbable" is a fun word in this headline
@jamellebouie.net as always killing it... In the Opinion section. This is what is ACTUALLY going on y'all. (Gift link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...
@nytimes.com email this morning, "Remaking the government"
"We're covering the overhaul of the federal government."
"All of this news can seem chaotic and unpredictable. But beneath it all, Trump has a vision."
"Much of what [he's] doing might be illegal."
...MIGHT?? Y'all HAVE TO DO BETTER.
At this point I am waiting for an EO like "Requiring professional office attire" that requires all women to wear skirts.
It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives
We've got 80 awesome geo women+ on this list now. I know there are more who should be on here! Please tag them or comment if you'd like to be added.

What a wild time to be a Fed. Hold the line y'all.
Add me please!
Do not obey in advance.
One thing that we *consistently* underestimate as a country is misogyny.
Happy Steve Kornacki day for those who celebrate
Happy AGU Fall Meeting abstract submission day! If you're using AI/ML to understand marine geoscience processes, consider submitting to this great session led by my NRL colleagues: agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/pr... 🧪
