News Alert! I will be rotating off @aslo.org #LOBulletin as an Associate Editor. It's been an awesome 4 years, and I've learned a lot. But time has come for new ideas! If you're interested in being an AE, please consider this call and reach out if you have questions. www.aslo.org/lob-associat...
We're all looking very forward to seeing what sort of projects this dataset launches, and how many others adopt and adapt our AWS framework for their own regions. It's a very exciting time for remote sensing of water quality, and we hope that this dataset elevates everyone's analyses even higher.
Behind the scenes -- We've created an AWS Open Data Agreement to publicly host all 700 TB of these data. All metadata are updated dynamically to ensure reproducibility and provenance is retained. To put it mildly, this was a massive effort among some seriously skilled scientists.
We applied the ACOLITE reflectance correction in an AWS framework, where as new Sentinel-2 imagery come in, the images are automatically corrected and published via an AWS S3 bucket, Globus, and ScienceBase. As far as I know, this is the first dynamic, national-scale aquatic reflectance product.
A challenge to remote sensing of #lakes #wetlands #rivers is that many of extant satellite products are corrected for land, making water signatures muted because water is dark. We constantly hear about how we need an aquatic reflectance product. So, we made one. doi.org/10.1002/lol2...

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Stay free
We’re gearing up to start discussions for 2026 :) stay tuned!!

I've given several talks at posit conf, but I've never gotten to give the "here's the super awesome new thing I worked on that I now get to share with you" kind...until this year! Come to the commercial products session to hear me talk about building container images with Connect, it is so coooool 😁
Check out this excellent conceptual manuscript helmed by the inimitable @mishafredmeyer.bsky.social. Definitions are key to conducting research and 'trophic state' proves to be exceptionally complicated!
And many thanks to the excellent discussions at @aslo.org and @gleonetwork.bsky.social that led to this manuscript :)

Or to quote my favorite line from this piece: “Without an epistemological evolution, the fields of aquatic ecology and water quality management run the risk of developing divergent understandings of ecosystem function.”
And we highlight how these varying classification schemes can dramatically impact other fields that might be using these limnological ideas, such remote sensing.
We also looked at how our understanding of regional water quality can change when you apply different classification schemes at national scales.
We recreated figures from Wetzel’s Limnology text to see how fundamental ideas, such as clinograde and orthograde Temperature and DO curves, shake out when you apply various trophic state classification schemes.
New paper alert!! Our viewpoint piece uses data from the U.S. EPA National Lakes Assessment + Landsat to see how differing definitions of trophic state can skew and enhance our understanding of lake ecosystems! @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
It takes patience to have a conversation about definitions as a collaboration begins... but it is important!
"Trophic state" in lakes is one of those concepts! It really makes a difference which definition we use... @mishafredmeyer.bsky.social
