Every time we go to the parks (which is kind of often, because a family member is an employee so... cheap/free) I think about how it's some of the most wild R&D and surveillance tech in the world and I'm glad it's all in private hands, not governments

My grandmother -- the wife of that single-earning dad of five who had to run the house while he was on classified work trips accidentally making a second family with the side piece -- definitely, *definitely* told me from a very young age to always make sure I had my own money.
I met him, once, when I was working at GameStop in NYC the year after finishing my film MFA and still looking for full-time work. He seemed very surprised that I'd recognized him, and he bought a bunch of Nintendo games for someone.
