Point taken. But what about inflation. There used to be a Billion Prices index or something. Was that a bust?

I’m not remotely endorsing corrupting or canceling federal economic data collection.

I’m asking how blinded we are to reality without it. Completely? 5 out of 10?

Here’s my question for the economists & reporters:

There are a number of private sector measures of the economy (Challenger, ISM, consumer sentiment, etc).

How good a picture of the economy can we get from those, if federal data are corrupted?

The totally groundless firing of Dr. Erika McEntarfer, my successor as Commissioner of Labor Statistics at BLS, sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the statistical mission of the Bureau. For a full statement opposing this move, read:

A truly baffling decision by a Biden-appointed Fed governor to step down several months early, handing Trump another seat on the Fed at a time he's attacking its independence.

And announcing it today of all days, after he's removed the BLS commissioner. SMH.

Again, the way the markets have reacted to all of this totally baffles me. Stocks were down, but modestly.

In the spring, it looked like the markets might save democracy. Now, not so much.

In a Country Trump Says Nobody’s Heard Of, Tariffs Bring Chaos President Trump promised Africa that trade would replace aid, but in one of the world’s poorest countries his administration is slashing both.

"Shelile says a lobbying group that purported to have access to prominent members of Trump’s family asked in a virtual meeting for $1.5 million to campaign for tariff relief. He didn’t identify the lobbyists."

Two Trump appointees dissented yday and called for rate cuts, which Trump happens to be pushing.

The markets have totally blown off the danger posed by Trump’s attempt to fire Powell.

NEW: I spoke with a woman named Andrea about her experience being detained by ICE after calling the cops for help during a domestic violence incident.

She was recently postpartum, breastfeeding & put in an all-male facility. She was detained for 2.5 months.

The “deal” that Brown made with the Trump admin is much more extreme than is being reported. It includes government oversight of course evaluations and no barrier to government interference in faculty hiring.

Read it for yourself here:

It looks like Harvard is not up to the task of leading the defense of academic freedom and democracy in the United States. It was a big ask, to be sure, and sadly, it appears Harvard is not big enough. History will not look kindly on us.

Concealed Handguns Create a Climate of Fear, the Gun Industry’s Own Research Reveals The gun industry is pushing Congress to loosen restrictions on carrying, even though routine carrying makes even its customers feel less safe.

1/My primary concern as an investigative reporter is unearthing what the gun lobby/industry does not disclose to the public. In that regard, I consider my latest story for @thetrace.org and @rollingstone.com to be among the most significant I've ever published: www.thetrace.org/2025/07/gun-...

I hear lots of commenters confidently predicting the Dems will take the House next year.

These numbers suggest otherwise.

(And also suggest that the Republicans wouldn’t have to manipulate the election results, as many fear.)
