Why did thousands of adult titles just disappear from the biggest PC gaming marketplaces? Digital distribution platforms Steam and itch.io have tightened their rules about adult content – under pressure from payment processors. Why has this happened and where will it lead?

Steam and itch.io have removed thousands of video games in recent weeks deemed to be "adult content" in order to comply with strict rules from payment processors like Mastercard.

These policies censor artists engaged in lawful speech. Mastercard shouldn't be the gatekeepers of our digital freedom.

I took the "confused and asking questions" route on the phone with Visa today and in my initial questions, I didn't mention video games at all and the person on the phone said "Visa doesn't block payments to video game sites" so I KNOW they're floundering under these calls.

I think I was a bit too young at the time Homestar Runner was at its peak popularity so the entire thing completely passed over me

kinda hard to beat mario kart DS, but you can't play as johnny bravo in that game...

my previous roommate had this and I only played the first few levels. Pretty fun - played a lot better than I expected. Kind of insane the concept even got made into a full game, but I guess they had to make more games to justify the DK bongos

I like WarioWare! Smooth Moves and Touched are the two games I grew up with. Most of the others I've never played. I'd love to play Twisted but it's pretty expensive on the aftermarket.

beat it on 3DS way back in the day, then only played part of the Plague Knight DLC. Really enjoyed it and thought it was one of the first games to get the modern/NES balance right. I do kinda wish they went with 4:3 instead of 16:9 but I can understand why they went widescreen.

not really into zombie games, but it's Capcom so maybe I'll try it someday!

I've definitely heard this game's music... I just watched part of SNESdrunk's video on it and I think I need to play it now...

really cool and unique 3D platformer! played it (and its sequel) for the first time a few months ago. wasn't able to save because I couldn't find my memory card, but I'd definitely play it again

love it aesthetically and all that but it's pretty cruel to actually play through

I like Metroid but I've never played any of the Prime games (except the Prime Hunters demo that came with the original DS.) I have the first one on Gamecube so I guess I don't really have an excuse not to try it, though I'm a little put off by the idea of playing an FPS with a controller.

I have over 260 hours in Lethal Company. we played it almost every weekend for the first year it was out. when we got bored of base game content we destroyed it with mods. some of the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer co-op game.

REPO is great too - more polished but overall not as fun/scary

first played it on my 3DS (the port, not the 3D one) a long time ago. I recall getting stuck on some huge tunnel boss near the end and never finished it :(

one of the first games I ever played, very close to my heart. my mom says she used it to teach me how to read, since I wanted to know what the characters were saying lol

i played a little bit of the first (or second?) game on a friend's PS1 for about an hour. really loved the atmosphere, i wanna give the series a proper look someday.

i played it once when i was like 8 at my neighbor's house and i don't remember it at all lol
