Funny addendum to this - Ron Howard told a great story from THIRTEEN LIVES where Farrell ran a full marathon the day before a particularly physical day on set, and they kept telling him not to do it, but of course he did it anyway and stumbled through the shoot more or less in shambles.

So where in the past the October box office could be bolstered by movies that came out in September, August, or even July, as ads and word of mouth remind people they’re around, now October’s box office is just October’s releases. And there aren’t enough of us who keep up like that.

There’s also no ability for growth. It’s not that every movie is a sleeper hit, but even at a basic level, the audience who’s going to even know to go see THE MASTERMIND in the three weeks it’s around is very very small compared to the audience who might go see THE MASTERMIND over 2-3 months.

Insane that so much of the early publicity was about how much they built and did “for real.” The film is blanketed in CGI and all of it looks awful. Del Toro’s need to overlight his sets leaves no way to hide this. The opening sequence looks like TINTIN.

I think the weekend of the 17th literally six movies opened I wanted to see. Just an insane clog. Way too much considering it’s a crapshoot to guess which ones will last more than three weeks.

The trick is finding a dump that still has good projection, because bad digital projection is the pits. In LA, at least we have the Lumiere, which feels like an art house theater should, and the movies still look pretty good.

Between the tariffs, the immigration crackdown, and cuts to SNAP, Trump is creating a mass crisis in U.S. farming. And a lot of this stuff can't be walked back. Chinese markets for Argentine soybeans won't just switch back when Trump TACOs again. Bankrupt farmers can't just bounce back next year.
