When someone is "of faith" I do not take this as a moral blessing or a moral failing. I hold that the most good and the most evil of people can be religious zealots or atheists or anything in between. Your religion does not make you good. Ever. It's what you do with it.

This is because in part, a lot of people want to be told exactly what to do to "get into heaven." They want to remain childlike. So something/someone will always tell them what to do, for a price.

The Protestant Reformation at its start was an attempt to do this-separate from the oligarchy that was the Catholic Church and let people figure out the Bible on their own. But there will always be consolidation and power grabs when it comes to organized religion.

The biggest step is separating belief or acknowledgement of God/higher powers from organized religion. So many people--regardless of political alignment--are yet incapable of doing this apparently.

The ability to acknowledge "God" or gods exist in one form or another (in my opinion, many forms) and acknowledge science simultaneously is an evolutionary step that some people haven't reached yet.

God in my personal experience is a social construction, something that comes out of our DNA, & maybe a lot more, could be aliens are at the root of it...look at dimensional theories too.
