Treating Trump's Abuse of Power as a Spectator Sport
What is a "win" or a "victory"?Β Those words can only meaningfully describe having prevailed in a contest that could have gone the other way...
Congressional acquiescence in Trumpβs clawback bill is further evidence (though none was needed) that separation of powers in the U.S. is moribund. Yet journalists and pundits cover the story with fascination rather than horror. Prof Neil Buchanan has the details on the blog. π

One of the things about JD Vance is that he is completely 100% aware that what he is doing is evil and has made a deliberate, conscious choice to do evil to get power. Heβs not self-deluded or dumb. He hasnβt drunk Kool-Aid. Heβs decided to do evil for power.

Iβve thought about this quite a lot. For some New Yorkers, this phrase refers to civil disobedience and protest, a call to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.
But I know for many Jewish New Yorkers, it brings to mind images of the like that you are speaking of. I was sitting with a rabbi not too long ago who told me how the same phrase is heard very differently by her and itβs heard as a reference to bus bombings in Haifa, restaurant attacks in Jerusalem. It engenders a fear in her and in others of those very attacks coming home here in New York City.
That distance between what some intend and what others hear is a bridge that is too far, and it is why I have not used the phrase and why I discourage its use. My focus is on building a movement for justice and equality, and as it pertains to Israel and Palestine, I think often of the words of Noy Katsman, who lost their brother in the horrific war crime of October 7th. Noy said we must believe in all life, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish and Arab, that it is equally precious. That is the vision that I hope to fulfill.
It was just a few months ago that I met a New Yorker in Brooklyn who told me of how more than 80 members of her family have been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. This is a devastation that many New Yorkers are feeling personally. Itβs one that for others, they are witnessing on a day to day basis, and it continues until today. Just last week, NBC News reported that the Israeli military bombed a health clinic in Gaza, killing 10 children, including a 1-year-old who had just uttered his first words hours before. We are speaking of a place that is now home to the greatest number of child amputees in modern history.
What offends so many in this city is this horror is one that is subsidized by our country.
This is what mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani told @errollouis.bsky.social when asked about the slogan "globalize the intifada" and his position on Palestine. (When Mamdani said "images you're speaking of," he was referring to the Second Intifada.)
