The mother is an asylum seeker. Her 7-year-old is deaf and didn’t have his hearing aids when he was detained.

Jacobs: The Trump administration doesn’t give a shit about the Iranian people… They are literally deporting people back to Iran who fled the brutal Iranian regime.

He doesn’t care about human rights anywhere — not here in the United States, not in Iran, not anywhere else.

This is what Hegseth promised. He should spend the rest of his life in a jail cell.

Nice seeing the military at the w4 St subway stop today, felt like 2003 all over again.

There are some tracks where I'll never forget the first time I heard them. That's a big one for me.

Of the three JD versions, the one from _Still_, as Justin describes, is the one that haunts. The clearest vocal and the most unsettling of impacts.

I'm old enough to remember people saying after they saw what a "cakewalk" Iraq was we should just do Iran next and even the hawks were like "no we'd lose, that's too stupid to take seriously."

Imagine if someone bet god that he couldn't create an area that you can't pour enough money or people into to take over, because someone made that bet and that night god got super high and designed Iran.

Didn't think I'd ever be thankful that I only had to deal with the guilt and repression of a Catholic upbringing.

Folks who didn’t grow up in American evangelicalism & think that “we’re at war to kick off Armaggedon” story sounds far-fetched—it isn’t. There are many folks—lots now in positions of power—who desperately want war in the Middle East because it’s required by their interpretation of Biblical prophecy

I continue to be gobsmacked at 1) how common this formulation is 2) how antisemitic and generally bigoted it is 3) and how for all the talk of anti-semitism this is never cited as an example even though it’s quite literally the original incarnation.

If you're tenured or even TT, this isn't as much of an issue, but if you're contingent faculty, admin "suggesting" you look the other way in the case of a blatant violation of academic integrity can be read as more than a suggestion.

05.03.2026 21:41 — 👍 19    🔁 1    💬 0    📌 0

Yep, that's exactly how it's written in my syllabus and how we've been told to treat it by upper admin. But enforcement of policies happens at the school level, and some schools are encouraging profs to be more permissive, because they don't want to impede student progress toward graduation.

I'm 100% against this personally (obviously do whatever works for you!): it adds so much more time to our work and in my case doesn't actually help them learn the thing I'm trying to teach them, in terms of process. But that's specific to the classes I teach.

Perfect illustration of how the "podcasters are turning on Trump" narrative is bullshit. These guys still want the camps to churn out black smoke, they just don't want to see video of how the bodies get there.

05.03.2026 20:47 — 👍 333    🔁 87    💬 6    📌 0

Thanks! I want it to be more than "I know it when I see it" but there's an element of that. I know I'm not catching 95% of it, but I also don't want to view every student through a suspicious lens, which is unfortunately where this is pushing us.

05.03.2026 21:06 — 👍 4    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

...but if you get to a point where I'm 100% convinced, you've done more than have it help you organize your thought bombs or whatever. And my policy is that it shouldn't be anywhere in your workflow, to avoid these sorts of grey areas. We talk about the benefits of process to try and address this.

05.03.2026 20:59 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Yeah, great question bc I struggle with it too. But: completely made up citations is an easy one. References to high-level ideas/concepts beyond anything we've encountered in the course that deviate from what they've shown me in earlier writing. It sucks and I want to burn it all down...

05.03.2026 20:57 — 👍 6    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 0

And admin has pushed back, suggesting that we give students a pass on what are often willful and intentional attempts to pass work they didn't do off as their own. So the lack of support from admin is part of the challenge we have in the trenches with this stuff.

05.03.2026 20:52 — 👍 36    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 1

Nuts/bolts stuff: I tell students I hate being an AI cop *but* it's so hard to detect now that when I'm ironclad convinced they've used an LLM to produce their work, it's an academic integrity violation that goes passed up to admin.

The U.S. war on Iran is now estimated to cost $1 billion per day. Meanwhile Americans are told there’s no money for healthcare, hospitals, or basic social programs.

If you're at the airport and Kristi Noem is doing the ominous little message from the TSA screens, you no longer have to do anything she says. Leave your laptop in the case, whatever.
