in a just world, everyone involved in shit like this would go straight to the Hague.

The Department of Education has hung a massive banner honoring a racist college dropout who built a lucrative career out of targeting professors for harassment

So, so instructive to compare media response to Afghanistan withdrawal -- months of hysterical garment-rending & catastrophizing, relentless criticism of the admin -- with the response to an unprovoked, unmotivated, illegal war of aggression, ie, "some critics say maybe Trump should have reasons."

every five to seven years this country bonks itself on the head with a big cartoon mallet, causing total retrograde amnesia and also little birds to fly around its head

The costs of this Iran war debacle will likely be more than the cost of extending the ACA health insurance subsidies.

If you asked Americans, which do you want: another war in the Middle East or lower health care costs at home, is the margin 90 to 10? 95 to 5?

Years ago our admin did a red and black report. It took salaries & how much $ each instructor made in tuition $ for classes we taught-you were in the red or black. They released numbers once & shut it down bc humanities were producing huge $ for uni & engineers, business and scientists were losing $

Press gave Biden far worse coverage for a small number of American soldiers dying while leaving a war than to Trump for a similar number dying while starting a war for no reason. It makes you think!

it’s wild how everyone hates Fetterman (correctly) and there’s a guy running who’s basically holding a huge I’m The Next Fetterman sign and it hasn’t slowed him down at all

The campaign picking Walz BECAUSE his "They're weird" was gaining traction and then having him drop that remains a real head-scratcher to me.

I need someone who knows more about vinyl than me to explain why the pressings from big acts are almost always lower quality than those from smaller indie acts

Am I having bad luck? Manufacturing differences?

I don’t even really think this is fair. Iraq was heavily debated publicly, and there was a plan. It was a stupid and delusional plan based on unrealistic assumptions, but it was known publicly and voted on by Congress.

There was no public debate or Congressional authorization in this instance.

I know that everyone here hates the β€œDonald Trump started a war and jacked up your gas prices” messaging but β€œDonald Trump started a war and jacked up your gas prices” is likely the single thing about this nightmare that will most affect the day to day lives of a lot of people in the US

There were def people in Washington who advised Trump not to do this, basically saying, "hes 90, hes had cancer twice, hes going to die soon anyway. Dont make him a martyr for the cause". He didnt listen.

Everyone skips past the 02 financial crisis because 09 was so bad.

But depending on how you parse millenial...it's been bad for awhile but also the worst bit is they grew up during a period where things were getting better and then got the rug pulled out from under them.

Donald Trump’s FCC has been coming after the broadcast networks for their so-called political biases. @brookegladstone.bsky.social spoke with the conservative lawyer behind it all.

the incentives here are so obscenely terrible that the entire thing should be illegal by default

β€œI am sabotaging negotiations because I stand to make piles of money on Polymarket” is absolutely in play, what a horrifying clusterfuck

Update: the American Girl dolls books for this doll were, in truth, about the grim history of the 1980s. I have now read aloud a book about 3rd graders witnessing the Challenger explosion and a second book about them dealing with community bigotry against a classmate with HIV

Inside the Growing Scientist Migration to Europe For decades, the U.S. has attracted talented scientists from all over the world. That may be changing.

Good piece on the β€œbrain drain” from the U.S. and the history of its β€œbrain gain”. For the moment, while the numbers might be up, it looks like the real loss is in talented junior and future scholars, rather than senior β€œstars” (as most of these programs are not competitive for the latter).

It tells you something about the disorientating rate of change underway that nobody is particularly shocked that a head of state has been assassinated by other states, something which has *never happened* in the modern era. Which is illegal under US law. Shed no tears for Khamanei, but still.
