SORUM, 2001
South Korean drama/thriller/horror about a grown orphan with a messed-up history, and his return to the tenement he grew up in his youth. The "ghosts of the past" come to light, and the orphan is left puzzling over what drew him back. This was okay.

SCROOGE, 1971
This musical holds up exceptionally well, I think. Superb period piece, delves into the character of Ebeneezer Scrooge without excessive sappiness, and has admirable and understated effects. This version is worth coming back to every year.

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, 1920
A silent film, now over 100 years old. A pantomimed tale of a mad scientist moonlighting as the evil Caligari of legend. Evocative German-Expressionist sets. Strangely tragic ending. Moves at a snappy pace. Very good for what it is...!

THE AWAKENING, 2011
With an atmospheric setting of post-WWI British countryside, it was a joy to look at. Pacing could have used some help though, and even Dominic West couldn't help knock this one out of the park. More a mystery than a ghost story. ...Yeah, she died.

CHRISTMAS EVIL, 1980
Criminally-underrated psychological thriller based around a man traumatized by his belief of Santa Claus being shattered when he was very young. Excellent camera work to complement Brandon Maggart (who happens to be Fiona Apple's dad). Oddball finale.

THE HITCH-HIKER, 1953
Two buddies hoping to go on a bender in Vegas are instead sidetracked by a hitchhiker they pick up along the way. He's a stone-cold killer with a bad eye (and an even worse attitude, haw-haw!) set on fleeing to Mexico. This one is well-done.

SPIDER FOREST, 2004
Another well-done ghost murder mystery from South Korea. They attempted telling the story through flashback and multiple crossing time-streams or something, and while it was more or less implausible (hey, it's ghosts), I enjoyed the ride.

BLACK CAESAR, 1973
An African-American power fantasy written by a white dude. The camera work and editing was impressive (especially in the third act), and fun street scenes with unpaid extras. Exploitation, sure... but stick around for the bangin' soundtrack.

DER HUNDE VON BASKERVILLE (German: "The Hound of the Baskervilles"), 1929
Features some creative panning shots in the first reel, Holmes acting like a superhero in a particularly creative escape from a flooding tunnel, and of course moments of Watson being a doofus.
