This isn't me arguing against tools, to be clear. I just think that I can see the, "Why setting your instance to 'medium or better' is discriminatory" thinkpieces now. I think we'd all sigh and move on, buuuuuuuuuuut...

I'm sympathetic to it, believe me. I think tools would help, and I don't think people should be forced to try to run events with sticks and twine...

...but I also think folks should be willing to take a harder stance, too, like, now. Kick 'em if they're very poor.

They also have an entirely different hardware ecosystem, in many ways. There are parallels, but I'd be careful to not fall victim to context collapse here

I actually think the issues with the JP community re: optimization and avatar performance are different, in many ways. They've a lot of bad habits that have been built up for many years, with an entirely *different* base of knowledge, of which we have little insight into... at least, until recently.

this used to be something people were able to do and enforce, so why can't they do it anymore? what is fundamentally stopping people from doing it?

Realistically, Persona is a good investment as a VC -- there's a lot of potential there, given the global regulatory environment as well as public outcry about digital spaces.

I think the most likely answer is the most boring: this isn't some data collection ploy. They're just making a logical bet.

Virtually every product or service you use likely has one of these listed companies as an investor. Such is the nature of tech -- it's mostly startups powered by VCs.
