What happened to those post-Brexit farm subsidies? We need a discussion about UK food and farming, our resilience to external and self-inflicted events, and where the money is going

Boris Johnson promised farmers that “subsidies would stay - 100% guaranteed”.

🚜 The National Farmers’ Union council was overwhelmingly in support of “Remain”, but decided not to campaign outright, as it would upset some of their larger farmers who were cheering Brexit.

Wow. Imagine the shock for the Daily Mail when it finds out Tory plans were for fines of £5k - later reduced to £3k - for each missed heat pump sale. What Ed Miliband has done is to reduce that to £500. As @torstenbell.bsky.social says today Headline should read “Miliband slashes Tory boiler tax”

Well surprise suprise, colour me shocked.

Both in the news today for differing reasons. Michael Sheen who remortgaged his house to fund the Homeless World Cup, Jeremy Clarkson who bought a farm to evade tax.

Important context here:

● over half of farms are less than 49 acres (20 hectares)

● "a big farm" is 217 acres.

Now let's see who's angry:

● Clarkson farm is 1,000 acres
● Lloyd Webber farms 4,000 acres
● Viscount Rothermere (Mail owner) 4,700 acres
● Dyson owns 36,000 acres

That just won't flush away.

And those women probably voted for Brexit, which ironically made farmers poorer, along with the rest of us, so cry me a river.

Got myself an imposter already. For the avoidance of doubt, this page has nothing to do with me.

I listened to the newsagents podcast where a farmer was asked if he would want to pass it over to his adult son now rather than later to avoid the IHT, and he said no, he wouldn't. I literally have no sympathy for them. It's still damn good at 20% ffs.

You've got to admire Farage for turning up. He sold the farmers a massive Brexit duffer, with promises of sunny uplands. And now he's protesting, saying it's everyone else's fault. He really does have some brass neck. Anyway, farmers pay your IHT it's still better than the 40% we normal people pay.

And THAT is exactly how people with a huge sense of entitlement regularly behave when they get caught out.

You really do have to admire Farage's grift. He sold the farmers a Brexit duffer, then turns up to say it's someone else's fault they are poorer, actually you don't have to admire him he's a c#nt.

So now the multimillionaire Jeremy Clarkson is out in London alongside the multimillionaire Farage, one of the multimillionaire Johnson siblings along with many other multimillionaires to try and convince us they shouldn’t have to pay a tax that many people with far far less than them have to pay.

Please spare a thought for James Dyson, the Brexit-voting billionaire who bought up 33,000 acres of farmland to avoid tax then moved his business to Singapore. He's the real victim here.

Can someone explain to me why farmers should be exempt from IHT when the rest of us have to pay ?
