Can*Con came back in 2010 thanks to Jim and Farrell and has flourished since. That’s why Derek and I offered to continue once they were stepping back, because a local community is so important.
It feels like a strong maybe? I mean there are so many variables, but my experience is this: when I started being published around 2008, it was during Can*Con’s hiatus. I met my Ottawa writing group (which Derek is a part of!) at World Fantasy in Calgary. Calgary!!
This. I struggled for a while trying to figure out what the heck my voice was, especially as ESL. Then I clued in it was whatever the heck the story needed.

The only thing it feels worthwhile for me to say right now is pay attention to whether your feelings & the information you’re absorbing are paralyzing you or prompting you to meaningful action, whatever that is. Paralysis helps no one but the enemy.
I know it’s difficult right now, but I insist that you seek and enjoy beautiful things, even if it seems frivolous or irresponsible in the face of overwhelming horror. I want you to feed yourself artistically, spiritually, and literally, because you can’t Do The Work when you’re starving.
