A tennis court with a crown and a tangled sword on the side “Interesting seeing you here, Your Highness.” Ute didn’t imagine that Świetlana had time for recreation, not with the ball coming up and the aftermath of a national funeral. Świetlana wipes her forehead with the ragged cotton band on her wrist. “I could say the same. I thought you had rehabilitation.” “This is my physical therapy.” Exertion takes Ute’s breath between statements. “Rebuilding my kinesthesia.” “Oh.” Świetlana taps a finger to her bottom lip. “That makes sense to me. Would you like to play a set or two?” She gives Ute a wide smile. Despite her own tiredness, Ute isn’t sure she can refuse Her Highness. She looks at her therapist, who has already stepped aside, giving them space. “I would enjoy that greatly.” It’s not the first time it’s seemed like Świetlana’s staff can read her mind. Unlike other aristocracy, Her Highness doesn’t ask for things, she’s just given them. Most aristocratic last names have inherent value, but none more so than Iwanowicz and it shows. Ute picks her wooden racquet off the ground with her still clumsy hand. It hurts. The new muscles twinge with soreness that she’s going to need more pills and poultices for. She wiggles her right shoulder. Each movement causes flickering pain, and she’s not looking forward to seeing what the abrasions in her skin might look like from the belts. But she wants to indulge Świetlana, especially when she’s so carefree. A little disheveled, a little sweaty—it makes Ute ache for her scent and wanting to know just how sticky Świetlana’s skin feels against hers. THE FEALTY OF MONSTERS illus. by Soren Häxan OUT NOW
