I know of 'ẓǝɣ': to extend, deploy, to raise a tent: iẓɣa taxamt, iẓɣa brraž ifriwn-nns.

But not with Chafik's meaning.

Which oddly mirrors:
the root ZƔ gives
> 'azzaɣ': to invade, pillage, ransack > 'amazaɣ': invader (which according to Chafik is the original meaning of 'amaziɣ/imaziɣn': those who invade and are not invaded (sic))

Tamasna (arabized as el-Gharb) region, the land of the Brɣwaṭa is a very fertile land, but in Tashlḥiyt the word 'tamesna' refers to a 'land without water, trees, rain... a desert'.

In his article on Berber origins in the Encyclopédie Berbère, the great Salem Chaker assumes linguistic continuity from the late Neolithic. One of the arguments he adduces is the lack of evidence for substrate toponyms - so the absence of traces of pre-Berber languages.

A definite possibility. It occurs in a hagiographic story: a thief attains sainthood by feeding meat to a shunned woman who had just given birth (she blesses him thus)... the story has also a resurrected cow/heifer.

We (SE Morocco) have two distinct words for disease and fever:

> iɣnka (lit. catch-of-something) = disease, illness (there is also: 'tamuḍint' for serious illness)

I have not heard or read of any connection. The name is more prevalent in Tash. domain. Locally (to me) we use 'ɛšša'.
