You Donโ€™t Need More Ideas. You Need a Better Question What Michelangelo, a Nobel Laureate, and a PhD Meltdown Taught Me about Research Questions

You donโ€™t need more ideas.

You need a better question.

A thread on clarity, chaos, & what a Nobel Prize winner, a mosquito net & a PhD meltdown taught me about writing (+ thinking) better.

Israelis have a skewed view on extent of Gazaโ€™s hunger plight โˆ’ driven by censorship and media that downplay humanitarian crisis Exposure to accurate reporting over the dire plight of people in Gaza resulted in 5% bump in those in Israel who supported aid convoys.

In our survey, @carlokoos.bsky.social and I examine Israeli perceptions of the humanitarian situation in Gazaโ€”and reveal a striking gap between what Israelis believe and what is reported by reputable sources. theconversation.com/israelis-hav...

Looking forward to reading this. Despite being involved in many RCTs, there is always this lingering feeling that the (parts of) interventions we randomize and evaluate aren't the most impactful part of a program as it often excludes activities taking place at the institutional and aggregate level.

This new paper is so cool!

It shows that the media use passive voice, nominalizations, and intransitive verbs that obscure responsibility in cases of police killings.

Because they do this, citizens are less likely to hold police officers responsible for bad behavior.

๐Ÿšจ In the "The Gendered Costs of Stigma", we explore the gendered responses of survivors to sexual violence in the DRC, Liberia, and Sri Lanka. The use of #list_experiments shows that respondents need anonymity for sensitive questions in surveys.

๐Ÿšจ We're rejuvenating this account, and happy to share recommendations!

Check out "Gender after Genocide", an outstanding article in World Politics and read how the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia reshaped women's roles in politics and the economy in the long run.
