Rice terraces ascend the slope of the valley like stairs. The Banaue Rice Terraces may be as old as 2000 years old. Farmers still tend to them. They were built only by human hands and human power. No bulldozers, cranes, steam shovels, etc.

A view of Cheonggeyecheon Stream in Seoul, South Korea. People stroll on the side paths. Reeds and grasses sway gently. A burnt orange bridge spans the stream in the background. Some of Seoul's many modern buildings stand in the background. Cheonggyecheon Stream is maybe the greatest example of urban re-purposing I've seen. Only NYC's High Line competes. Historically, there was a stream on this location. After WWII, Seoul and Korea rapidly modernized. The stream was replaced by an elevated highway. Eventually, the local populace complained of air pollution, a diminished quality of life next to the highway, traffic jams in spite of the highway, etc. In 2003, the government of Seoul tore down the highway and replaced it with Cheonggyecheon Stream. It was an instant hit, and it remains popular today. At times on the weekend, there are so many people here that "traffic jams" occur. The place is crowded both day and night. Catfish and other fish forage in the stream. Herons and egrets eat some of the fish, while magpies, crows, andn other birds sing and squawk from the trees. If you ever get to Seoul, definitely makes this your first stop.

Soft light scatters over a deserted street in Seoul, South Korea while I waited to be picked up for a city tour. Our hotel was smack in the middle of Seoul's street food district. Starting in the late afternoon, this area fills up with carts selling a wide variety of food and some consumer goods. Surprisingly, the area is not covered with litter despite what appeared to be a lack of trash cans. I guess Koreans carry their garbage with them until they find a receptacle. In the US, people would be tripping over garbage in such an area.

On a chilly late fall day, I saw this adult Cooper's Hawk perched calmly in a bare tree. It glanced at me briefly, then took no further notice of me as I snapped away. It's crop was very engorged, so it was in no hurry. All was well in its world for the time-being. I actually left before the hawk did, highly unusual.

A majestic common buzzard stands alert on a rocky outcrop by the water’s edge. Its plumage is a rich mix of browns with lighter streaks on the chest, and its sharp yellow talons grip the dark rocks firmly. The hooked beak and focused gaze give it a powerful, commanding presence against the soft blue-grey background of the rippling water.

A juvenile red-tailed hawk perches on a fire escape. Red-brick building behind. I came out of the grocery store and saw this hawk across the street. My hands were full of grocery bags and it was too far away for my cell phone. "Don't go anywhere," I admonished the bird. Hurried back home, grabbed my camera. Remarkably, the hawk was still there.

An augur buzzard gives me a look-over. Taken in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. The crater is an extinct volcano. Because the crater is relatively cut off from the nearby land, the density of wildlife inside almost guarantees sightings. The rim of the volcano is visible in the background. Augur buzzards are in the buteo family of hawks, so they are related to the common buzzard in Europe, and the red-tailed hawk and red-shouldered hawk in North America.
