“You’re doing your part so why isn’t Elon Musk doing his?” That’s how I’d phrase it.
Norway is at ~100% EVs for new sales, but 7 out of every 10km driven in 2024 was reliant on fossil fuels. Cars stick around for decades - so change is slow.
Protecting ppl from fossil fuel crises means EVs, yes, but *fast deep cuts* means huge $$ in public and active transport. Speed matters!
yep. i believe that the "best" tool for the job does not always mean the "fastest." there are plenty of times when it might take me half as long to drive as it does to take transit, but that if one factors in thinkgs like cost, parking, danger of driving, etc. i'll take the longer option anytime.
One might say I’m an *avid* getaroundist.
Very few tix left! Atlanta is showing up. I can’t wait for tonight.
I am a getaroundist. Whatever mode makes the most sense at the moment and the situation I find myself in is the mode I use.
You guys are like chocolate and peanut butter -- go great together!
"Cars are the most absurd means of transport in a city. They are parked 95 per cent of the time. It takes two tonnes to move someone who weighs 70 kilogrammes. And the denser the city, the more absurd it is."
Norman's piece is right on: car free watch parties all over town is exactly how the city should celebrate the World Cup
Also: boycott Trump-bootlicking-FIFA official fanzones
Mamdani linking free buses to sports events in NJ subtracts a lot of the urgency of "economic relief for struggling NYers"
But this is why I'm glad actual researchers are digging into this subject. It turns out, a whole lot of Americans don't necessarily prefer being dependent on cars and might be interested in a different way of living.
Imagine if anthropologists visited a remote village with no grocery store and one restaurant that only served hamburgers and then concluded based on their observations that the villagers prefer hamburgers. That's essentially the discourse surrounding Americans and their relationship to cars.
A guy rammed his car through a door at Detroit’s largest synagogue and got out with a gun and was shot by security before he could massacre everyone inside.
And yes all synagogues that can afford it have security. And yes it’s exactly because of situations like this that they do.
The Atlanta show is shaping up to be one of our biggest and bet yet. Tickets are going fast so don't miss your chance to join us at the Plaza Theater and support @letspropelatl.bsky.social tomorrow night!
This is more than twice what it would cost the federal government to honor its trust responsibility and fund Tribes to relocate villages and infrastructure away from sea level rise and other climate hazards.
Instead, they’re literally putting fuel on the fire.
In the first six days, "Pentagon officials told lawmakers... the cost of the war had exceeded $11.3 billion," or 3.8 billion NYC bus fares.
This interview with the great @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social was a "wow" moment for me. Thanks, New York Times and David Marchese.

I couldn't help noticing the question that seemed the most Times-like to me.
None of this is true, but also... low hotel rates would not be a sign of a booming economy. Quite the opposite!
This was one of my favorite interviews about the book we've done so far. What a pleasure to talk with @annehelen.bsky.social about Life After Cars. It's always fun to talk to someone who has a high level of knowledge about the subject.
Also, the Beltline is fantastic. It's been built out a lot since I was hear last, with lots of development around it. The only downside is that it might be a victim of its own success, with a little bit of crowding... and this was on a Wednesday afternoon! People love car-free spaces.
This is our country. Donald Trump doesn't own America. He doesn't own the White House. Everything he does relies on our money.
We depend on Congress to represent our interests. They are failing us by allowing him to exploit our money for his personal interests. He & his party of sycophants must go.
Really looking forward to this!
It's looking increasingly like these guys thought that if they could wreak more death and destruction than the other side then they would be respected as strong powerful men and they would "win" and that would make them big important heroes. Very possibly they had no rationale deeper than that.
Holy shit - this would be very, very bad:
"The databases, called “Numident” and the “Master Death File,” include records for more than 500 million living and dead Americans, including Social Security numbers, places and dates of birth, citizenship, race and ethnicity, and parents’ names."
So Democrats want to take away one of the most visible signs* of Trump's disastrous and illegal war in the run-up to the midterm elections?
*Quite literally, there are signs on every corner. It's free advertising of Trump's failures!
It’s COVID all over again. He’s in a situation he can’t bullshit his way out of so all he can do is flail around and make things worse. Except this time the whole thing is his fault and literally all of his advisors are grifters and imbeciles
The only issue, as @2avesag.as notes, is that the administration won't let a DC version of congestion pricing happen, nor will it sign off on any other city trying it either.
"This isn't Midtown Manhattan" is to congestion pricing as "This isn't Amsterdam" is to bike lanes. Not that you can copy and paste from one city to another, but there's no reason a version of congestion pricing wouldn't work in DC and lots of other places.
Tapping the sign: "Trump administration official says something" should never be breaking news.
Finally listening to @thewaroncars.bsky.social Life After Cars, and can't believe we have at least two trend-setters featured, @tonyjordan.bsky.social of Parking Reform Network and @coachbalto.bsky.social of Bike Bus. Any other city hit this hard?
It's this, more or less.
