Baby in a cot Image asking those whose baby was in a hospital in Ireland or the UK to take part in a research study

Has your baby been admitted to hospital in Ireland or the UK?

We are a team of researchers at Queen’s University Belfast studying how a baby’s hospital stay affects parents. If you’ve experienced this, we’d love to hear from you.

New paper:
The communicative principle of relevance

This is a law-like generalisation about communicative behaviour; and in my view a landmark in our understanding of human interaction. This short piece briefly explains and updates it in (I hope) useful ways

Affective science folks - what taxonomy do you know with both affective and mental states? Example from S. Baron-Cohen's Mine Reading library from 2003/2004 with 24 groups and 412 items. Anything more recent?

The built-in pals were the first "AI thing" I found genuinely useful for my work.

They tackle problems common enough to care about automation but too tedious to program against. Getting an "about right" solution, combined with a bit of manual polishing was definitely an improvement. #RStats

Zotero is great and I think that anyone who needs to organise and cite more than a handful of references should be using it. Here's an intro to Zotero that I made for my undergrad students (but the info is relevant for anyone new to Zotero).

Universities are failing. They badly misunderstand crowd psychology.

"By aggressively treating crowds as if they are dangerous monoliths, the police...create identities bound together in opposition to the authorities"

We wrote about this research in our book (powerofus.online)
