How Meta Executives Talked About Child Safety Behind the Scenes For years, employees acknowledged a problem with potential child groomers, but prioritized growth over fixes.

Behind the scenes, “Meta was divided on whether protecting kids should take precedence over user growth and engagement. For years, the company only incrementally rolled out restrictive safety features, even as its own staff detailed the risks its platforms posed to children.”

Ban Prediction Markets They don’t produce knowledge, they can’t prevent insider trading, and they turn politics, war, and death into a cash-out.

Finally caught up with this great piece from @currentaffairs.bsky.social on the prediction market, which actively targets economically precarious young people. Absolutely no reason for this market to exist, let alone their ads to be everywhere

Super Bowl viewers Sunday speculated that 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos appeared in the halftime show. In fact, he has been in hiding with his family.

“He can’t sleep well at night. He wakes up three or four times a night screaming, ‘Daddy, Daddy,’” Liam's father Adrian Conejo Arias, said.

Seeing Zohran instantly getting a bunch of shit done in like a week makes you realize that politicians could always do that on some level if they wanted it bad enough and very few of them actually do.

And there’s a federal version of this bill that you should tell your lawmakers to support.

Op-Ed: With KOSA, Elizabeth Warren is Betraying the Trans Youth She Claims to Protect Evan Greer writes for EITM: "KOSA’s re-emergence comes during a moment of existential crisis for the Democratic party."

"Warren’s co-sponsorship of KOSA is a shocking betrayal at a time when anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry is ascendant and self-described “allies” in Congress are abandoning our communities to the MAGA wolves" @fightforthefuture.org

another thing worth repeating about the Grok "situation"

theres an essentially infinite amount of consensually made adult content online to fit every possible preference, kink and desire

making deepfake porn of others without their consent is about twisted power and control, not being horny

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health. Should we trust it? The new feature helps users understand test results, get advice on diets and workouts, and prepare for doctors’ appointments.

One interesting thing about this is how few articles covering this mention OpenAI’s coming move to integrate ads, which merged with people’s health data, presents a wide range of predatory scenarios.

This. Whats happening w Grok is a supply chain issue: a harmful tool made available for harmful uses.

All the talk of OSAs and yet there does not seem to be a regulatory instrument --or the will -- to actually go after Musk. This speaks more to the failure of our regulators.

We are seeing world events like the kidnapping of Maduro through the lens of the most depraved AI you can imagine. And if you thought the Grok CSAM shitshow was bad, it’s likely getting worse. @evystadium.bsky.social has more.

LLMs are not sentient, are not human. Grok cannot “apologize” or explain how or why any of this is happening. But of course major outlets such as Bari Weiss’s CBS News wrote that Grok “acknowledged ‘lapses in safeguards'." @jasonkoebler.bsky.social with more:

What a way to wrap up the year by sharing COSPR's work at #39c3! Antagonistic framing of children's safety vs. adults' privacy does no one good. We need critical connections to move us towards effective, compassionate, and enduring interventions.

As both the House & Senate look to repeal Section 230, I'm curious who they think should be held liable for the comments they've left open on the Epstein photo dump...? Them? Dropbox?

Do they have a trust & safety team watching the comments?

We spent long time studying the question "does training data filtering help prevent generative models from generating unwanted content?"

TL;DR: Nope. In some cases it slightly increases difficulty but not enough to prevent even average users from finding ways to create what they want.
