La mariposa blanca grande Madeira está oficialmente extinta. Otras 65 especies de mariposas europeas están en peligro de extinción, igual que 172 especies de abejas silvestres.
Y solo va a empeorar si no se detiene el cambio climático, la intensificación del campo y el abuso de pesticidas.

Ataque de un macho de abeja Anthidium a otro macho que estaba descansando. Al final parece que intenta clavarle las espinas que tienen estos machos en el culo. No he visto cosa más camorrista entre las abejas que los machos de este género.

New paper out on an important issue — monitoring insects requires preserving the specimens. We explored this issue using data from the Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab, which has systematically destroyed most of their specimens for decades. A 🧵(1/10)

A live male Panurgus in a plastic tube. Collected from the CISE pollinator garden.
Eight bee specimens were mounted on a foam plate and left to dry with pins. All specimens were collected in accordance with standard practices, identified and labelled, and will be integrated into several NH collections. Disclaimer: I collected the specimens for training purposes during the course.
A pinned bee specimen in my hand. I don't remember the ID. It's cuticle shows metallic reflections –maybe a tiny male Seladonia? Below the specimen is a collection label. This specimen belonged to the aforementioned FLOWer Lab.
