Original 1925 jacket cover of The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby
Here is a novel, glamorous, ironical, compassionate a marvellous fusion into unity of the curious incongruities of the life of the period which reveals a hero like no other one who could live at no other time and in no other place. But he will live as a character, we surmise, as long as the memory of any reader lasts.
"There was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. ..
It was an
extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again?"
It is the story of this Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous er-tertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe.
It is a magical, living book, blended of irony, romance, and mysticism.

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

-FS Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, published 4/10/1925.

Predatory journals: what can we do to protect their prey? A growing number of entities misrepresent themselves as scholarly journals for financial gain despite not meeting scholarly publishing standards.1,2 As editors and members of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), we receive queries about these β€œpredatory” or β€œpseudo” entities and are subject to their deception when they target our authors and reviewers. The number of predatory journals is difficult to accurately determine but was estimated at more than 15 000 in 2021.3 While the ICMJE Recommendations include warnings about predatory publishing,4 the Committee believes that the large number of increasingly bold predatory entities warrants shining a bright light on them and considering actions stakeholders can take to counter their deceptive efforts.

β€œThese deceptive practices endanger authors, academic institutions...science, and the public.”

Contribution of vaccination to improved survival and health: modelling 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization Since 1974 substantial gains in childhood survival have occurred in every global region. We estimate that EPI has provided the single greatest contribution to improved infant survival over the past 50 years. In the context of strengthening primary health care, our results show that equitable universal access to immunisation remains crucial to sustain health gains and continue to save future lives from preventable infectious mortality.

Half a decade later, at least 154 million lives have been saved globally.

That’s according to an analysis published in @thelancet.bsky.social last year ➑️ bit.ly/3DGoQlf

In 1974, the World Health Organization launched the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Why? High rates of vaccine-preventable disease.

Battling misinformation and disinformation

Battling misinformation and disinformation

naccurate information about diseases, treatments and vaccines undermines trust in science and public health. It threatens global health by distorting public perception and eroding confidence in evidence-based policies. During emergencies and conflicts, misinformation exacerbates health crises by fostering confusion and fear and diverting resources from a coordinated response. This erosion of public trust is leaving populations vulnerable to preventable diseases and fueling inequities.

WHO continues to fight against misinformation and disinformationβ€”a great challenge to global health. Governments, health agencies, and partners need to safeguard public trust by responding to misinformation and disinformation directly and effectively.
