I think its different with humans. Sleep is an active process and your brain works hard while you sleep. We cant really fully "shut down" like computers do. If the metabolic activity of the brain fully stops it just rots. But you can unplug a computer and then turn it on and it should be fine

What if their ongoing stream of consciousness is the thing that dies when they shut down? When you shut down and restart a computer you are kind of doing the equivalent of killing someone and creating a clone with all of their memories.
