‘[She] said words in the Han Gwich’in language that essentially mean, “We’re not a threat to you. Have mercy on us and leave us alone.”
Her grandmother and other elders always told her that animals understand the Native language.
“I’m glad I remembered that and that I knew those words,” she said.’
Good text that should help many people understand that it is generally not a very good idea.

"A Stream of Voices", our article series in partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, features firsthand stories of language revitalization around the world. Read stories from language champions in Canada, Cameroon, Guatemala, Pakistan, Ireland, and Brazil:
Another story in our "A Stream of Voices" series, Antônio Jorge Medeiros Batista Silva's beautiful article on reclaiming the Krenak language from archival materials, is also the top story in Folklife right now! folklife.si.edu/magazine/str...
The article weaves together the centuries-long history of oppression of Irish, the ongoing language revival movement, and the stories of Alexandra's own family's relationship to the language - all encapsulated in one day taking the train to Dublin.
Wow - we're proud and honored that ELP Mentor @alexnicp.bsky.social's article "Taking the Train to Dublin City: A Journey to Speaking Irish in Ireland’s Capital" was the #3 most-read story in @smithsonianmag.bsky.social Folklife Magazine this year! 👏
Just TWO DAYS left to help us reach our goal - we only need $1,000 more to reach the bare minimum for Ready to Revitalize!
Help more incredible grassroots language activists connect, learn, and develop fully funded community projects, like this one that bridged Māori and Breton communities:
"I believe this future of [linguistic] freedom is possible, and that all of us working in language revitalization are contributing to that future."
We are raising funds to support 20 language champions around the world, working to build futures for their own languages.
Can you help by December 31?
"I believe the responsibility of the present generations is to create possibilities for the future of our languages. This is a gift we can offer to future generations: the gift of a choice that was denied so many of us."
"When we are pressured to abandon the ways we speak, we are being pressured to abandon the ways we understand the world, and the ways we relate to each other.
When we reclaim and revitalize a language, we are reclaiming our right to choose and live our own ways of relating to each other."
What does language endangerment mean to the people experiencing it? Dr. Emmanuel Ngué Um reflects:
"When languages, or language practices, are threatened, it is really a threat to human relationships: the ways of living and connecting that our ancestors developed and passed on to us."
Language champions from 18 countries will be joining the 2026 Ready to Revitalize program - and we have just TEN DAYS left to raise funds for their grassroots #languagerevitalization projects!
🌱 Will you support the revitalization of Indigenous and endangered languages around the world?
Indecisive on what to give your family and friends for Christmas? Instead of a hideous, dust-collecting, last minute seasonal decoration you should opt for a donation to Ready to Revitalize 2026 for supporting Indigenous communities worldwide! @e-l-p.bsky.social

"The new monolingual Irish dictionary changes this paradigm. Instead of asking 'What's the English for X?', speakers will now be empowered to ask 'What does X mean?' in their own language.”
