Over 40% of global shipping by volume exists to move fossil fuels from one place to another.
A huge share of the world's maritime infrastructure has been built around a system that is going to change dramatically as renewable energy and electrification displace fossil fuels.

My husbands cousin worked as a teacher in Arizona and then at GAP on the weekend to get by. She switched careers because it was not sustainable. What a crazy country where they donโt value teachers. An important job teaching and inspiring our next generation.

Economists love to point to insurance as the market-based solution for adaptation - allow premiums to reflect risk and adaptation will follow.
In the real world there are limits to the effectiveness of this approach.

Group work and learning to work with others is an essential skill. Yes itโs hard to assess, but we shouldnโt stop doing it. I do think that we need to actually teach students how to do it better, rather than just expecting them to figure it out.

The idea that we can โovershoot now, fix laterโ is simplistic.
Overshoot relies on massive CDR, but temporary warming can trigger tipping points and long-lived changes: ice sheet loss, permafrost thaw, ecosystem shifts.
Cooling later doesnโt guarantee reversal.

Major threats to our well being from climate change can be avoided, or hugely reduced, by rapid action.
Our Nature comment calls for a global risk assessment, effectively communicated to governments, the media and the public, to make clear what is at stake.
