Economists love to point to insurance as the market-based solution for adaptation - allow premiums to reflect risk and adaptation will follow.

In the real world there are limits to the effectiveness of this approach.

Nice commentary by Jo Weil and Jesse Gourevitch:

Paris urban biking investment helps cut pollution in half: β€œBetween 2005 and 2024, levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter β€” 2 of the most harmful pollutants to human health β€” have been slashed by 50% and 55%, respectively.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social momentummag.com/paris-proves...

My kid (grade 11.5, age 16) wants to study climate science, but would like more info on careers/jobs broadly in that field so she has a better idea of what she might like to do. If you studied climate science or similar, what do you do now? #science #womeninscience #womeninstem #climatescience

Rare Earth is back on air & today's programme was all about the OCEAN 🌊. What does the future of ocean exploration look like, and why does it matter? And we met a seal (name: "Seal-ia", see pic) modelling the latest in both ocean science & teacakes. Listen online here:

Group work and learning to work with others is an essential skill. Yes it’s hard to assess, but we shouldn’t stop doing it. I do think that we need to actually teach students how to do it better, rather than just expecting them to figure it out.

Deeper ocean ecosystems are unique – and uniquely vulnerable without better protection

A new study challenges a common assumption that deeper marine ecosystems act as refuges which could reseed damaged shallower reef systems.

The mining companies should be paying. But someone should clear up the land. Interesting documentary about this thst I watched recently. The waste slag heaps are large and the dust from them is influencing a large area. #asbestos #aus

The hard road back from overshoot - Nature Climate Change As global temperatures move beyond 1.5 °C, overshoot now defines the landscape ahead, sharpening legal claims, exposing economic risks and revealing how far politics still trail the pace of change.

The idea that we can β€œovershoot now, fix later” is simplistic.

Overshoot relies on massive CDR, but temporary warming can trigger tipping points and long-lived changes: ice sheet loss, permafrost thaw, ecosystem shifts.

Cooling later doesn’t guarantee reversal.

Australia’s most costly anti-climate policy hits taxpayers for $30m a day as calls mount to wind back fuel tax credits | Adam Morton The government will hand over $10.8bn this financial year under the scheme that makes it cheaper for miners and other industries to use diesel and petrol

Excellent piece in @us.theguardian.com by Adam Morton on massive fossil fuel subsidies in Australia to diesel.

β€œThanks to fuel tax credits, big companies are allowed to pay significantly less to burn dirty fuels than households”

We need a global assessment of avoidable climate-change risks To understand the urgency of emissions reductions, policymakers and citizens need a full analysis of what is at stake.

Major threats to our well being from climate change can be avoided, or hugely reduced, by rapid action.

Our Nature comment calls for a global risk assessment, effectively communicated to governments, the media and the public, to make clear what is at stake.

Anyone else dress on theme when they are teaching? I regularly wear this pair of shorts for my marine classes in summer. Combined with my PS Sonne t-shirt @sgn.one.
Nice to see I wasn’t the only one on theme today with Carissa Klein @uq-cbcs.bsky.social also dressed in a marine pattern dress.

I decided to run my marine geoscience class how I ran the @anzic.bsky.social @ukiodp.bsky.social masterclass in 2024. So it’s going to be very hands on - the students will learn how to read and interpret a sediment core.

These cores were collected 30 years ago on the RV Franklin and were still soft enough to open. Very well cared for - completely sealed and kept in a fridge for 30 years. (Older than the students - in multiple ways).

I’m exhausted after my first 4 hours… but excited as I decided to give just a short intro and then get the students straight into the lab to cut and split deep marine sediment cores that I was recently donated by a retired colleague. Look at the beautiful carbonate ooze in the cores.
