Salford cycle lane paused after thousands of residents object Residents say the Salford active travel scheme would be a

Great news for Salford City Centre!

The Peel Green scheme has been paused, with the potential for the funds to be redirected to schemes in Salford City Centre.

Great to see 'left behind' areas of Salford having their funding moved to more affluent areas

Lime to run West Midlands cycle and e-scooter hire
Published: Tuesday 20 Jan 2026

More than 2,000 new bikes and e-scooters are set to hit the streets this April following the appointment of Lime as the region’s latest cycle hire provider.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has selected Lime, a global leader in micromobility (the collective term for bikes and scooters), to take on management of the official regional hire scheme following a competitive bidding process.

The agreement means that for the first time the scheme will operate at no cost to the taxpayer. Until now cycle hire has cost £1.4m a year to run.

Lime is introducing a new fare structure but has committed to maintain existing overall price levels for the first two years to make sure sustainable travel remains affordable.

And just like that, 2000 e bikes roll out across Birmingham

In the 7 years we've had Beryl running our bike here we've barely lifted above 1000 bikes.

@andyburnham.bsky.social we are being short changed.

Active travel groups call for clear targets on walking and cycling in England
Exclusive: Groups including British Cycling call for active travel strategy to be put on equal footing with road and rail Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3 (CWIS3)

Dear Secretary of State,

Active travel directly advances all five of the Government’s missions — improving health, creating opportunity, delivering safer streets, driving economic growth and meeting our decarbonisation commitments. To realise this potential, the forthcoming Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3 (CWIS3) must move from good intentions to a clear, long-term, fully deliverable national plan comparable to other strategic transport programmes. Currently, CWIS3’s proposed objectives, “ensuring people are safe to travel actively” and “ensuring people feel it is an easy choice”, are open to interpretation and not measurable.
List of signatories

NEW: 50+ transport and health groups have written to the Government calling for clear targets in the upcoming Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3, as well as a comprehensive plan for a national active travel network, matching the long-term strategic focus given to roads.

Today we rode to demand safer streets for women cycling in winter.

Cycling is joyous but many women feel left out of our movement. It's time that changed.

Pay-per-mile a really effective policy because it encourages drivers to think about each trip they take, rather than driving automatically just because they’ve already paid the fixed costs of owning a car.

Had LC for 18 months. Went from cycling across the Pyrenees and top 5ing my local Hill Climb, to not being able to walk more than a few km and using an e bike as a mobility aid. Happy to have a chat.

‘More egalitarian’: How Nepal’s Gen Z used gaming app Discord to pick PM
It was a first for an electoral democracy. Backers say it is more transparent than what politicians do. But it has risks.

They're using Discord to pick the next PM in Nepal but Active Travel people still think it's just an app for gamers 😭

Using the hive mind on discord, we were able to to pool together evidence to object to the removal of a cycle lane on campus at Man Met Uni

All this was done without ranting social media. Just a coordinated campaign undertaken by hundreds of determined advocates

So we set up a discord for Walk Ride GM

After a slow start, the discord now has over 400 members all contributing to local campaigns, split into productive regional channels and discussion topics.

Cycling around Manchester/Salford is just 100x better than it used to be, even if every so often the route just randomly dumps you on a pavement next to a motorway and goes “yeah this will do”. Their rental bikes are also better than the TfL options... when they work.

Former Wigan Athletic youth player jailed for mowing down pensioner

Media coverage is fuelling a backlash against e-bikes. But often, the stories aren't even about e-bikes at all.

Last week, the BBC reported that an "e-bike" was involved in a serious incident. But it was actually a high-powered electric motorbike.

Here's how it got changed...🧵

The photo shows a bright, bustling street in Greater Manchester with a well-designed floating bus stop. A woman rides a Starling Bank hire bike in a clearly marked, segregated cycle lane, while a man follows on a cargo bike. A yellow Bee Network bus pulls into the bus stop, where people are waiting safely on an island between the cycle lane and road. Quotes overlaid read: “Good-quality, segregated infrastructure is vital” and “The Government does not believe a ban on floating bus stops is appropriate.” The Walk Ride GM logo appears in the corner, reinforcing the call for safe, inclusive streets.

NEW 🚨 The Government has confirmed to local MP Jeff Smith that they will continue to support high quality cycling infrastructure with floating bus stops.
