Scientists sharpen genetic maps to help pinpoint DNA changes that influence human health traits and disease risk By rapidly testing hundreds of thousands of DNA sequences, scientists have identified specific genetic variations that contribute to blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and more.

Pinpointing the exact noncoding variants driving locus-disease associations is an enduring challenge. Using MPRA, a @jacksonlab.bsky.social, Broad & @yaleschoolofmed.bsky.social team tested >220,000 variants in 5 cell types, resolving >13,000 and revealing mechanisms behind several disease traits.

Study reveals genetic balancing act between autoimmunity and cancer risk Researchers pinpoint genetic factors linked to both higher risk of a common autoimmune disorder and lower cancer risk

The same genetic variants that heighten the risk of autoimmune hypothyroidism β€” the most common autoimmune disorder β€” may also lower cancer risk, according to a new study led by scientists at Broad, @helsinki.fi, and @mgbresearch.bsky.social. broad.io/AIHT-news

Research Spotlight: Discovering Risk Factors for Long-Term Relapse in Alcohol Use Disorder | Mass General Brigham Mass General Brigham researchers study risk factors of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and precursors to long-term relapse among individuals after one year of complete remission.

New research shines a light on why long-term relapse happens in alcohol use disorder, even after a year or more of sustained remission.

In a new Cell Reports study, we examine a specific antibody family elicited by early COVID-19 vaccination and show how antibody maturation and binding diversity can allow some antibodies to remain effective against later variants, including Omicron. mgriblog.org/science-insi...

Genetic variant increases risk of heart muscle disease common in individuals of African ancestry A single mutation in the CD36 gene, present in 17 percent of people with African ancestry, increases a person's dilated cardiomyopathy risk by 33 percent.

A new @natgenet.nature.com study by Broad, @mgbresearch.bsky.social, and VA Boston collaborators reveals a genetic variant that helps explain the high dilated cardiomyopathy risk in people of African ancestry.
