If you stuck around for this week‘s epilogue, we ranted about Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ use of SF geography. It‘s actually worse than we recalled. The Apes are on Bush St which has no cable car and doesn’t even point to the water. The Hyde line they’re on runs on the other side of Nob Hill

I just hope he never watched Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

I’m excited for when all the artists are gone and a set of AI excretions costs as much as an illustration did. Maybe even more. You know, like Ubers after they killed the cab.

This post really, deftly lays out the entire right wing argument for GenAI. Notice it doesn’t just take aim at artists as elites, but also academics, a group of people famous for putting patches on their elbows because they can’t afford new jackets. Everyone is an elite except the very rich.

It’s crazy how Filmation thought every single shuttle needed to be a unique design.

That green lower dome is unwittingly accurate.

It would be The Cage because the railing is in two parts instead of four.

A fantastic episode and not just because The Jerks reveal that they'll be guest hosting Trek Marry Kill this month or because they confirm Bryan's suspicion that the Secret Hideout shows have forgotten that Betazoids are telepaths (not empaths), but because it's a very fun look at SFA's start.

Madisynn King holds a stemmed glass and a rose in front of a red curtain. From the Marvel show She Hulk.

I imagine Monique would have had very Madisynn energy.

The episode I remember most from this show is the very special Reaganesque “just say no” one. The main character is tweaking out on brain enhancers. It’s also well animated and introduced the phrase “ew, grosski!” to my vocabulary.

What really makes this powerful is that people are used to the Hollywood portrayal of teenagers who are usually played by people well into their twenties. This is the reality of what a teenager looks like, which is a child. Everyone should see this.

I also think it’s ok to reappraise someone’s personal work once you know what their true motivations were. Woody Allen and Louis CK’s work are insufferable to watch knowing their characters were reflections of their own bad behavior and not some kind of fictional commentary.

Perhaps these are not all disingenuous, retroactive opinions, but rather folks who always felt this way but it was considered gauche to criticize a popular artist. When they’re knocked down to human size it becomes open season.

Is there cel shaded animated slop yet? I wonder if maintaining line quality like that is difficult for GenAI. Looking at Aronofsky’s 1776 slop he couldn’t make the clips long enough for a line to be spoken to completion. It falls apart really quickly.

Adobe has enshittified all their stuff at one point or another. I agree with some takes that they couldn’t find a way to add AI to Animate and that’s part of the reason for killing it.

To be even more honest, there’s a heap that could be fixed in Animate. The most serious, to me, is its paint brush which is still a clumpy mess compared to Illustrator’s. They haven’t touched it in 20 years.

This, honestly, doesn’t make a heap of sense. Even if they never updated the app beyond making it future OS compatible, it’s on a subscription, usually with other apps. Nobody has to buy it. It can just continue to be part of the bundle. And most of all, continue to work.

Watching The Pitt gives me the opportunity to yell out “my god man drilling holes in his head isn’t the answer! The artery must be repaired!” Like every single episode.

A giant monster just rushed into the room, picked him up like a ragdoll, and slammed him against the wall. And yet he can’t look away from the circuits spilling out of the guts of the man he just shot.

Salinas Californian, February 1, 1989. Director Henry Jaglom, when Ted Turner was considering colorizing Welles' CITIZEN KANE:

"Orson said to me at lunch, about two weeks before he died--I remember this vividly: 'Please do this for me. Don't let Ted Turner deface my movie with his crayons."

Liquid glass is an unmitigated disaster that they will be slowly walking back for years. But my biggest peeve right now is the change to multitasking mode on iPad 26. It’s so messy and buggy I have to turn it off altogether when I’m not using it. I just want my simple split screen back.
