Two weeks ago I returned from a work trip to Rijeka—a small stretch of land where history has run wild over the past century: Austria-Hungary, the Regency of Carnaro, the Free State of Fiume, Italy, Yugoslavia, Croatia. What a CV!

History doesn't repeat itself; only the patterns of human behavior do. And perhaps also the rhetorical figures of dictatorships. Therefore, when documents about the 'expansion of the war by the West' land on my desk in the archive, I can't escape the feeling I've heard this somewhere recently...

No whining, please. We don't need parallels with 1938, but a modern Limes Romanus. Regardless of any peace or pseudo-peace talks, European countries, for which Russia poses a vital threat, must form a protective Wall. Together with Ukraine. Let's call it The EuroShield.

That is why several of us, who are actively involved in it, have decided to redirect our research projects within the best-funded ERC calls to the Czech Republic. Unfortunately. We would rather represent the Slovak Republic, but, at the moment, we have no other choice.

The current Slovak foreign policy isolates not only Slovakia as an actor of international relations, but also the Slovak science. Skepticism, distrust, silent contempt - these are the reactions we are most often confronted with in the European research milieu.

Slovak language is a pure gold. The gap between the campaign supporting Putin's revisionist-imperialist chauvinism and the campaign supporting the security interests of the whole of Europe stands on a single gap: 'Za mier' (For Peace!) vs. 'Zamier' (Aim!). I guess we can build on that in the future.

A professor of history, who has written dozens of books on East Central Europe and belongs to a group of my 'tops', has been expressing his thoughts on the Fifth Column in modern history as follows: 'There are only two options: either those people do it out of conviction, or for money.'

We are not (currently) threatened by such a threat, but, at the same time, the we should keep in mind that the NATO border is NOT a trampoline. Any fragments of Russian missiles shot down by Ukraine's air defense systems do not automatically reflect on the side of a non-member country... (2/2)

Slovakia was shelled for the last time on 26 March 1945. My grandfather almost lost his life on that day: he survived a Soviet air raid on Nitra only thanks to his brave aunt who covered him with her body during bombing (she became one of the 345 victims). (1/2)

Let me stay positive: It's not the politicians, who declare the outbreak of a world war and an exact trigger of it, but us: the historians ;)

I travel to Ústí nad Labem, one of the centers of the former Sudetenland, quite often. The architecture of the historic center was marked by two disasters: first by aerial bombing during WW2, and then by the communists. This is the view of Ústí's better part from the hotel. Morning vs. night.

What I have in common with Slovak democracy is that we are almost equally old (or young?). From the Belém Tower, the starting point of Portuguese sailors, I wish it to finally discover its better self on occasion of its 35th birthday. 🇨🇿🇸🇰 #velvet
