Front cover image of the book To Exist As I Am by Grace Spence Green. It shows a doctor wearing dark pink scrubs with a stethoscope around her neck, sitting in a wheelchair facing forwards. Her dark brown hair is just visible on her shoulders but her head is out of shot of the photo.

Just finished listening to #ToExistAsIAm by @gracespencegreen.bsky.social Brilliant writing and I always love it when audiobooks are narrated so authentically by the author.

AFTERWORD
DoEs
I finished this book while attending Abertoir: The International Horror Festival of Wales. I added my final adjective and then celebrated by attending a screening of Zombi with live accompaniment by the composer Fabio Frizzi. Love flowed in between the dismemberments and eye-gouging. The union of the frequently neurodivergent horror fans seemed even more empowering than usual, as the festival was one week after Trump's second presidential victory. The absurdity of zombies was not as absurd as the world itself.
I know that many people, including possibly you, have been hit hard by what appears to be a rubber stamp for regression, for a dismissal of anyone who is seen not to be 'normal enough'.
Even though weird' was used by the Democrat campaign to try to insult the Republicans, we know that those who the mainstream most often smears as weird' will suffer more under the new admin-istration. Across issues of ethnicity, gender and neurodivergence, existential despair has been evident.
I write this just to remind you that there are many allies ready to support and fight for you and those you love. And for all those who like to sneer at anything deemed as woke', keep the actor Kathy Burke's words in mind: 'They're calling you "woke" if you call out

Or, as she put even more succinctly: T love being woke, it's much better than being an ignorant fucking twat?
Know that there are many people in the world who want more light, more acceptance, more joy and more inclusion for everyone.
While writing this book, I gained a new habit. I have been energetically writing poetry.
It is a good hobby for ADHD people. You see something exciting, your mind fizzes, words pour out, there is just time to finish the poem before your mind gets distracted by a new fascination. One morning, returning from a trip to Slovakia, I was having a hasty* back-and-forth of direct messages with the librarian and author Stuart Hennigan. He mentioned the 'dark angels' that haunt so many of us.
This was my reaction.
Finally
I clipped the wings of the dark angels That had fluttered for so long like moths
In the last lone light of night
Once it was black
They were there.
Invisible
But ever-present
They'd beat their wings against the cooling bulb.
Only I could hear the flapping, But I'd deny there was a sound For fear of showing weakness.

Treating autism as shameful or blaming environmental factors is a step back to the days when scientists blamed unloving mothers or vaccines. It focuses on blame rather than supports. Focusing on the causes takes away money from lifespan issues and supports and services.
