A lil' Anurognathus cutie to hopefully brighten up your day! ๐ฅฐ
Fun facts: It's name comes from the Greek for "frog jaw" and it's thought to have used its pin-like teeth to capture insect prey! ๐

Awww, thank you so much for taking the time to draw something for me & all your fundraising! ๐ฅฐ
I absolutely love it!๐ So adorable & boop-able! โค๏ธ
Post a photo of an animal that looks Gen-AI but is 100% real.
Easy.
Scorpionflies (Panorpidae family).

Thanks everyone involved for running such a fantastic #Hymathon2025 yesterday! ๐ฅฐ
Learned a ton and great getting to know/catching up with hymenopterist from all around the world!
See you all again next year!
๐HYMATHON 2025 SESSION 3 SUMMARY!
๐ณ๏ธDear participants, please donโt forget to vote for the best entry in the ART COMPETITION and in the SHOWDOWN! (Link to our website in bio)
๐See you in 2h at SESSION 4!
Great presentation on such cool wasps! "Super beautiful insect" indeed ๐
Shame they were all the same D. burksi species not a new one, but very important discovery of their range extension all the way up to Taichung/ๅฐไธญ๏ผ
Time to grab lunch & watch some Hymathon showdown videos while the rest of the world power naps! ๐
Though if you are looking for a caffeine source that supports Wasp (+other insect) biodiversity research, might want to check out the work done by the Tea Fauna project! ๐ต
www.teafauna.com/home
Finishing off a lovely pt2 of #Hymathon2025 with:
- the Bush Blitz Blood Pact (may contain helicopters ๐)
- Taxonworks BBQ party (sadly, no actual food ๐)
- ISH private jet (looks like showdown winners ofc๐)
- Even MORE galls! (the gall of it all)
- Hymenopterist or Film Director?
Pt3 in ~3 hours!
Likewise with ๐ญ๐ฐ wasp just now! ( w Alexey Reshchikov @ HKU - Nice to see where those extra HKBM MBS labels have been going!)
Great talk about all the neat work being done in HK establishing a wasp baseline (very understudied place, especially for how biodiverse it is) + some amazing photos! ๐คฉ
Whoop~ Taiwanese wasps mentioned! ๐น๐ผ ๐ (Hsuan-Pu Chen @Hokkaido Uni & NTU)
Species richness in Taiwan Bassobates (subgenus of Darwin wasps) up from 3 to at least 35 sp. (due to temperate taxa found in mountainous area of otherwise tropical island).
New # moves it to 2nd most Netelia! #Hymathon2025
"MANY types of ecologically-based reproductive isolating barriers can contribute to speciation... and you can't measure them in a tube! - Habitat isolation - Temporal isolation - Immigrant inviablity -Ecological Hybrid inviability"
Slide from presentation: "If evolution of sterility were so important for speciation, these insects would not be able to make babies! But often we find little or no evidence for intrinsic post zygotic isolation/genetic incompatibilities"
Continuing #Hymathon2025 w keynote 2 by Andrew Forbes @ Uni of Iowa!
"For specialist insects, there is far more evidence supporting strong, ecological forms of reproductive isolation than post zygotic isolation"
aka. Ecological factors (eg. where they live) > Offspring repo issues for speciation!
(Keynote talk 1 by Amelia Lindsey @ Uni of Minnesota lindseylab.org btw)

Man, listening to sci experts share research (esp. stuff you don't know much on) is SO FREAKING COOL!
Like oh asexual repro of โs (thelytoky) is often due to maternally-inherited microbes eg. Wolbachia๐งซ.
We know cus we gave wasps antibiotic honey๐ฏ, now investigating specific genes.
Like what? ๐ฎ
(okay, so not all hymenopterans buzz and I'm probably betraying a bit of bee bias here haha.
Although... that would be an fun quiz/bioacoustics question to ask a bunch of entomologists- rank the insects based of how "buzz-y" they are! )
What's that buzzing noise I hear...? ๐
It's #Hymathon2025 , a 24-hour online marathon of all things wasps, bees, sawflies and ants starting up soon! ๐
@hymenopterists.bsky.social
~~~
Will mainly be around for session 2 & 3 cus time zones but looking to catching some comp entries & showdown! ๐
The schematics of the "Panasonic Counter-top Hot & Cold Showcase" SMR-CDC75CH3-L I found online, showing details of how the device keeps drinks both hot and cold at the same time.
(Why yes, I did look up the schematics online afterwards ๐
)
Looks like a combo of 2-ply glass insulation, good layer seals, heating/cooling shelves and fin tube type heat exchanger powering the everything!
Feels like something @techconnectify.bsky.social would be buying two of and taking apart! ๐คฃ
A hot and cold drink machine (labeled in Chinese as โๅท/็ฑ้ฃฒๆฉโ consisting of a clear glass case on grey plastic hardware. The top row is labeled with red Hot drinks tag, while the bottom two row have blue cold drink tags. Inside are about 50 tetrapack drink boxes, about half being tea (ๅทๆณก่ถ๏ผand the other being malted soymilk (็ถญไปๅฅถ). Photo taken myself.
Ever stumble upon a bit of everyday engineering so clever your brain does a double take at the sheer witchcraft involved? ๐คฏ
Cus yโall this drinks fridge does BOTH hot tea โจ๏ธ and ice cold soy milk โ๏ธ.
In the SAME glass case.
With ONE door.
(Like you can see straight through the case & everything)! ๐ฎ
Thank you to everyone that donated. We're at over ยฃ600 in donations going directly to the survivors of the fire. I apologise in advance if it'll take me over a week to get to get to your requested doodle.
I'm at TaiPo paying respects to the hundreds of innocent souls.
But yeah, in times like this everyone pitches in what they can. ๐ช
Your role is drawing kick-ass paleo art for donations (will send in my receipt later to add to the count). Guess mine is SciComm-ing blood donation in HK? ๐
Go with what works best for you- not everyone can/should donate blood & that's okay! โค๏ธ
Also zero shame in going in & changing your mind after talking with the nurse (screening in a private room away from others, people get deferred etc its normal). Can also donate smaller 350ml vs 450ml. ๐
So yeah, hopefully that demystifies the whole blood donation process a bit! ๐ฅฐ
Let me know anything you'd like me to clarify further - I'll do my best to help or point you toward someone who knows more!
And if you are looking for ways to help Tai Po: hongkongfp.com/2025/11/27/h...
Post donation things, including a can of pocari sweat (sugary electrolyte drink) and an envelope containing two pill bottles with iron supplements. Not pictured is all the cookies and crackers I ate during the 15 minute waiting period!
Step 5) Finishing the donation
- Enjoy the drinks & snacks provided once disconnected (got nice stuff like Pocari)! ๐
- Sit & relax for ~15 minutes before leaving (checking for reactions) ๐
Step 6) Post-donation care
- Take the iron supplement they give you in the 1-2 months that follow! ๐ช
Annotated image of blood donation machine and process.
Extremely unflattering, double chin image of me while donating blood.
*Can ask any Qs you have to staff, they're pretty friendly in my exp.! ๐
Step 4) The Donation
- Lounge back in the chair & let them get to work!
(skin disinfected + local anesthetic, 4 vials drawn for blood tests...)
- Squeeze a tube they give you to keep the blood flowing. ~10 min ish.
Folder containing the Blood Donation Registration (BDR) Form. The colorful cover sheet (with cartoon icons throughout) contains general information about the 7 step process to donating blood, as well as common reasons for deferment and QR codes to helpful information.
Step 3) Pre-donation process:
- Fill out paperwork (~25Qs, about med history๐, travel history๐ฌ etc- full list here, pg. 12+ www5.ha.org.hk/rcbts/donati... )
- Hemoglobin (Hb) test: Small pin-prick of ๐ฉธtaken from finger to check levels
- Nurse screening: Bp & temp check, go through form together๐จโโ๏ธ๐ฉโโ๏ธ
(Reminder: All blood types๐
ฐ๏ธ๐๐
ฑ๏ธ๐
พ๏ธ are needed, see OG thread!)
Step 2) Prepare for the donation:
- Sleep well the day before ๐ด
- Wear clothes with easy to roll up sleeves ๐
- Hydrate throughout the day ๐ง
- Have a meal <4 hours donation time ๐ฝ๏ธ
- Bring your booking info or donor card & HKID card ๐ชช
Okay, related to yesterday's ๐งต, thought I'd walk you through how donating๐ฉธ in ๐ญ๐ฐ works, in case fear of the unknown is holding you back!
(Photos all from earlier this year, tho donating again v. soon!)
Step 1) Make an appointment!
- HK Blood App/website
- WhatsApp @ 6279-7173
- Hotline @ 2710-1333
But yeah, unfortunately not a real substitute for sci journal access that comes along with groups like EntSoc ๐
just the community/network from meetings/events
NGL super annoying how $$$ access to good science is, esp. when scientists/writers & reviewers arenโt even getting paid for their workโฆ๐ฉ
-American Ento Soc ($30)
Same, safe for ppl wondering (dif. ๐ญ๐ฐ area)-
Have a friend (safe) who teaches secondary around there with affected students. Saw smoke, school closed Thurs.
Other friends who work at Edu Uni down the road have mentioned things going online & a support center set up in a sports hall.
Itโsโฆ yeah. ๐
