Unraveling the function of the hooked hairs of females of Monoeca species (Apidae: Tapinotaspidini) - Apidologie Females of all Monoeca species have strong hooked bristles on the mesosomal venter, leg bases, and metasomal sterna (2–4), which suggests that they could be related to pollen collection; however, this...

These wonderful #paintings of #bees were done by Hashime Murayama (1879–1954), a Japanese American painter and scientific illustrator and appeared in the July 1937 issue of The National Geographic Magazine. As much as I love #macrophotography, paintings such as these are such a pleasure to look at.

I have been interested in the faunistics of northern #Canada and #Alaska for some time. This lovely volume on the #arthropods of #Greenland is an excellent contribution; the three bee species are covered on three pages, though what was called #Bombus hyperboreus should now be Bombus natvigi.

I drew this for my aunt when I was a teenager before I had any knowledge of archival acid-free paper. It was framed without glass, and received the full range of exposure of dust and smoke from the house it was in. #pencil #art #dogs #sketch

#Honeybee colonies swarm when the colony gets too large, with 1/2 the colony’s workers + the old queen leaving to find a suitable cavity; this is what I though was happening in the first photo. However, open-air colonies are rarely observed in regions with cold winters like SK. #saskatchewan
