To lighten up the mood from my last post, this is how I've spent the majority of my free time the past 3 years π
We're in the middle of Langstrecke season (last weekend in Solothurn achterrennen.solothurner-ruderclub.ch ) and will be heading to the internationally famous Baselhead in mid-November π€πͺ

Alex Buerkle also just wrote me that idea, I will give it a shot!

I was told after the fact that I was supposed to use something called ChronosHub to pay for publications. Yet when I found out about this in 2025, they told me they no longer pay for publications as of 1.1.2025.
Don't know what options others have used, maybe they were just better informed than me.

And the second of these publications was directly related to a week-long machine learning course I took to better understand the topic we were working on. Yet I was also told this course fee was not eligible to be covered by my grant and owe this back as well.

Several things frustrate me here - the SNSF is credited on these pubs as supporting our research. Yet now want me to pay for this privately, knowing that I have left academia, do not have research funds to pay this, & that I *never* had research funds to pay this as Ambiziones only have their grant.

I guess I was oblivious, but when the secretary and finances office of the uni took my fees willingly to be paid by my grant, I never thought anything was wrong.
I have tried OA funds from the uni and a few other options and so far no one can pay retrospectively :(

As a first-time (junior) PI on a grant, it was the first time ever having to pay for my publications. And having never been informed that a grant from the SNSF could not cover these costs, I only found out upon receipt of my financial report after the grant had ended.

Apparently I made the mistake of using my SNSF grant money to pay for publications from my Ambizione grant in 2023 and 2024.
Does anyone know of possible solutions for retrospective funding to save me from paying 6800 CHF out of my pocket to the SNSF to cover fees paid to journals in 2023 and 2024?

Oh cool! That would also work well, the Acela goes from Boston in the direction I want! I will email you about it when my plans get a little firmer to see if it's still a possibility.

Is anyone I know planning to attend #evol2024 and then planning to drive back to the US on the 31 July? I'd love to carpool/help pay gas. Can go to Burlington VT, NYC, or even as far Philadelphia or NJ depending on where you are going! Any big transit station also works :)

Took a first step into machine learning, with Leo Zeitler, using ROHs and random forests to understand and infer sources of inbreeding from selfing versus demography. Happy to hear any thoughts and feedback!
