6/7 Taken together, our findings indicate that teaching evolution has the potential to increase variation in knowledge within populations and to enhance adaptive abilities in the many animal species that show parental care, including humans.

5/7 The influence of teaching on learning and cumulative knowledge should be especially relevant when the environment shows low between- and within-generation heterogeneity, so that knowledge remains relevant across generations and individuals acquire similar information through individual learning.

4/7 The increase in both innovation and transmission boosts cumulative knowledge. This coevolution also creates variation among families : some accumulate knowledge through innovation and teaching, while others rely more on oblique learning, avoiding teaching costs but acquiring less knowledge.

Using mathematical modeling, we show learning and parental teaching coevolve. When parents invest in teaching, offspring acquire knowledge vertically more efficiently. This allows them to shift earlier from social to individual learning, thus allowing them to innovate more later in life.

2/7 Teaching occurs when individuals facilitate learning in others at a personal cost, e.g. modifying behavior or environment to enhance knowledge transfer. Teaching has been observed across several animal taxa, especially from parents to offspring, but its impact on learning remains unclear.

1/7 Cumulative culture/knowledge occurs when information builds up across generations through a combination of innovation and transmission. In our new paper, we investigate the role of teaching and its coevolution with learning in this process.
