This investigation tells us that being “there” matters—that it’s important who saw what and when—and that in order to convey the full wrongs of war, you need to be in the right place, at the right time, and to press the button at the decisive moment.
In an age of AI-generated war images, deepfakes, and scrolling skepticism, this investigation stands out. At a time when witnessing has moved to digital social media feeds and truth often dissolves into virality, it’s rare to see a photo’s origin matter this much.
The new report, supported by meticulous research, spatial forensics, and camera analysis, doesn’t just question authorship—it restores accountability, and respect to the act of documentation and to the work of photojournalists.
Should a photographer document a child’s agony or rush to help? Who gets to decide how an image of suffering is used—or banned (As Facebook controversially did in 2016, citing child nudity over historical relevance)?
But this photograph has always provoked more than admiration. It forces a reckoning with the ethics of bearing witness: the uneasy tension between testimony and trauma, journalism and intervention.
Decades later, it has also taken on an afterlife—repurposed across platforms, reinterpreted through art, and even absorbed into internet meme culture.
Few images have shaped our visual memory of war like The Terror of War: the agonizing scene of a young girl, Kim Phúc, fleeing a napalm strike in Vietnam. The image became emblematic of wartime suffering, winning journalism’s highest honors and often credited with fueling global anti-war sentiment.
After more than five decades of attribution to Nick Út—who won a Pulitzer Prize and global renown for the image—his name has now been formally removed from the photo’s byline by World Press Photo, citing strong visual and technical evidence that he likely did not take it.
This week, World Press Photo released a seismic investigative report that casts new and sobering doubt on the authorship of one of the most famous photographs ever taken: The Terror of War.
