throwback to his “let’s move the Canada Post facility” proposal.

No plan or proposal, just crankiness over land his developer pals can’t have

But the arts, culture, and heritage also keep money circulating. A road trip to a museum or theatre will involve at least 1 ice cream stop (if not meals and a hotel stay)

Each dollar invested in the arts leads to $29 circulating in our local economies.

To them, things worth investing in are big corporations, natural resources, and highways. And yes, we do need these things

But we also need things that spark joy and connection. Shows to see, interesting places to visit, programs for young people AND adults.

Our politicians do not value labour that makes our communities more connected, more vibrant, and more human.

I suspect our gov fully expects that volunteers and organizations will pick up the slack. Just like our former premier expected women to manage childcare

Most of these organizations have a few (under)paid staff, and rely hugely on volunteer hours and fundraising to make things happen.

The funds being cut are a small budget line for the government, but are devastating for the effected organizations.

It's hard to explain, but to me, the NSian cuts to arts and culture carry echoes of Premier McNeil's comments about covid-era childcare being dealt with "organically"

Like caregiving, the "soft" work of community building, place making, and storytelling is not viewed as worthy of investment

Oops, I guess those stories are now earmarked for affordable housing in perpetuity

I’ve gotta say, I am a big fan of NSian pharmacists being able to write prescriptions for minor ailments

Booked the first appointment of the morning and was home with a prescription within an hour. So much better than playing walk-in roulette, and frees doctors up for more serious issues

'Help me, I’m in labour!' reporter hears during Halifax snowstorm | CBC News Brett Ruskin is not just a videojournalist. For one pregnant woman going into labour, he was also a paramedic, a therapist and a hero.

Didn’t encounter anybody in labour this time?

“what HRM is planning to spend on bike lanes this coming year is less than the Mayor’s total office budget”. Councillor Sam Austin

To put it mildly - I’m not impressed. I had hoped the mayor was finished grandstanding, posturing, and pitting himself against council, but apparently he’s still building his case for ’strong mayor’ powers by setting up losing fights so he can prove that council won’t work ‘with’ him.

Toronto shopping street

Half of business owners on this Toronto street estimated that more than 25% of their customers arrived by car.

In fact, it was 4%.

And the % of customers who who walked or cycled? 72%.

Retailers routinely overestimate the # of “car customers.” Via @carltonreid.com www.forbes.com/sites/carlto...

Yes to this.

Maybe the cap could only be applied to households under a certain income threshold?

This

People in the suburbs are sooo sure that they are subsidizing our fancy city life, but it’s really the other way around

It’s much more expensive to deliver services to lower density areas

The cap ensures that renters and new home buyers pay more than their share

We have half a million people

we need to stop acting like it’s desirable for every household to have a car or two.

The convenience of drivers is not more important than the safety of those who walk, roll, and use transit to get around.

It’s exhausting to have to keep explaining this

How about instead of eliminating Sunday and Holiday busses, council eliminates Sunday and Holiday plowing?

Oh, people have places to go on Sundays, too?

You don’t say…

Yes I’m writing my councillor, but this is such a backwards suggestion that I’m annoyed I need to waste my time on it

Riding the bus Sunday morning to get to work, and I just want to have words with the people in HRM who think Sunday/Holiday busses are somehow an extravagant luxury

Or are they planning to scale it back, but think this will make the fare increase more palatable?

Do any NSHealth facilities have disposal solutions for them?

I know my personal info has been leaked already (by NS Power AND by my employer) but maybe there’s hope for younger/luckier folks?

Seems like a small step NSHealth could take to help patients protect their info

Very specific Nova Scotian issue

Since OPOR, I am issued a plastic-y hospital bracelet at each of my OB appointments

They show your full legal name and birth date, so I would normally shred it

But it’s not paper, so if you care about sorting your recycling, it’s an extra layer of annoying

Agreed

Our car is for buying the heavy groceries (elderly cat with kidney problems = lots of cat litter) and for getting to the beach in the summer

I’m super grateful I didn’t need to put on my crampons and haul my 3rd trimester body over icy snowbanks this morning

It’s also a practical thing

Everything gets cleared better and faster if those who can stay out of the way

We collectively pay for medical treatment of people who fall on icy sidewalks and rising insurance costs when there are more collisions

It’s cold enough that my walk to the bus stop this morning was accompanied by a mental recitation of “the Cremation of Sam McGee”

Learned it in elementary school, didn’t even know it was still in my brain twenty years later

Stay warm, Halifax

Pro of hitting my third trimester: baby will let me tolerate a small cup of coffee occasionally. It’s been a LONG six months without

Con: little one won’t let me sleep for more than three hours, so I really need that caffeine

They’re doing some truly impressive parkour off my internal organs
