Economic diversification is part of CBF's funding & outdoor recreation is a key element. The outdoor rec economy is a significant contributor to NM's economy. In 2023, the outdoor rec economy contributed $3.2 billion to New Mexico's GDP, employed 29,182 people & provided $1.5 billion in income.

Many low-income households in NM spend a huge portion of their income—at times 18% or more—on electricity, which is much higher than the national average of 8%. Programs to improve energy efficiency in homes like those in the CBF are a smart investment for New Mexico.
