It’s totally that. They had internal filtration in them. This is why searching for one like that will be an easier way to make a proper inspired breathing mask for a cosplay and not disturbing to talk or breath with it.

The really old ones needed replacements inside the breather to keep them useful. This is why, during ww1, a lot of photos showing soldiers with masks that have pieces of wet clothing in their masks because the supplies didn’t come to them and with it, breather replacement.

That’s a good beginning. A lot of old mask breather can be easily worked on to be easy to wear and work with.
You gotta need to look closely inside the mask if you can remove things or not.

Better use a true old breather mask from second ww or an actual one that you could paint in an old color and work on it to pull off the breather inside the front part of the mask, but for the head. I don’t know which breather mask you could use for that.

Well if there's one thing I've learned during this project, it's that I actually love painting skin and faces when I mix my own colors rather than using premade.
Does it add 10 or 20 minutes per mini? Yea.

Is it worth it to have unique and diverse characters? Absolutely.
