Wow, that's a lot of packs.
TURTLE SOUP… MY FAVOURITE…!!

Gundam Seed Battle Destiny Remastered surpassed my expectation of being a diluted Gundam VS with no story by having even less! The gameplay itself is fine, flying around smashing things takes some skill. The mission banter of your CAW and partner is nice and I'd like more.
Will this pepperoni, mushroom, and anchovy pizza be a cowabanger or a cowabummer??

A second auspicious Big Machine.
Full Metal Schoolgirl has several idiosyncrasies for a 3D action roguelike that feel intentional. Zero auto-tracking for melee. Camera turn speed that's SO slow, but you can re-center. That it's skill-based instead of relying on drops. The game's quite stylish regardless.
WHAT IS THE CHARGE?
PILOTING A MACHINE?
PILOTING A SUCCULENT CHINESE BIG MACHINE??

TMNT: Splintered Fate was an enjoyable action roguelike. I get annoyed at chatty protags, but with the TMNT it is more in-character that they talk to themselves frequently. Combat gets hectic (good). Co-op is a nice twist. The amount of upgrade currencies is kind of too many.
Armored Core Mobile 3 skirts ever closer to being as real of an Armored Core game as java phones could get. A side effect, is that the game is way harder than the previous two. Render distance and large, empty areas make hunting for enemies irritating. It's still good, tho.
Finally free from the devil that is the DotA2 X MonHun collab.

Salt & vinegar chips no longer faze me. The ravages of age...
😤
Vital Shell is a garliclike that nails the mysterious feeling of early 3D games both in the aesthetic and aural. The gem system makes up for the (relatively) low number of guns. Some passives are really strong when stacked. Human-faced mobs weirded me out. I enjoyed it a lot.
Glory & Miserable Survivors DX offers an interesting twist on the garliclike genre by combining it with tower defense. Ergo, you ideally can't let any enemies pass you in a genre built on wiping out uncountable amounts of them. AOEs rule, lol. Progression is nice and breezy.
New Years arcade game kickoff! Mamorukun ReCurse! is a SHMUP that is extremely forgiving in it's Arcade mode credit feeding. The Curse Bullet system allowing you to debuff enemies or yourself for stronger shots is very interesting. Trying to 1CC it must be a nightmare, lol.
Sonic Rumble is fairly entertaining. The platforming physics are a bit whack compared to that of its main contemporary. The novelty of playing as Sonic (and as of this writing, Mechagodzilla) is nice. Power-ups being an integral catch-up mechanic is irritating, but I get it.
The playerbase is waning quite significantly after it was a flavor of the month, but I’ll keep playing until EOS, probably. The Welkin is too good of a machine to languish in obscurity trapped in this singular title. Hopefully more maps and PVE content are on the horizon.
Many of the machines are enjoyable to use, and smashing the ones I find particularly distasteful to itty bitty bits is just as satisfying. It feels like the devs put way too many eggs in the Mashmak PVPVE mode, which appears to be a ghost town in terms of matchmaking nowadays.
Al’s Ultra-Biased Games of the Year 2025:
#1: Mecha BREAK
Based on the amount of time I’ve blown on a videoed game this year this is the front-runner for sure. Mecha BREAK is effectively my TF2, in that it’s a hero shooter PVP game that I find myself playing frequently.
Some weapons were vastly more suitable for expeditions and boss fights than others, but since it’s single-player, that’s perfectly fine. It’s cheap, good, and (you) should buy it.
For a first attempt at this by a studio mostly known for visual novels, they kind of knocked it out of the park. The foreboding and lonely exploration of a megastructure paired with serviceable action mecha combat is well-melded here.
Al’s Ultra-Biased Games of the Year 2025:
#2: Dolls Nest
A wild dark horse entry in this year’s list. Dolls Nest is a significantly lower budget attempt at the oft contemplated Armored Core X Souls-style game featuring mecha musume. A niche of niche, if you will.
Only the title update stuff really posed a significant challenge and facilitated skilling around the hunt target. Endgame fights attempting to justify the 2nd weapon slot feels very transparent, it’s irritating. Master/G rank’s expansion should be better overall, maybe they’ll course-correct.
