"about twice as expensive as new renewables' - consumer NZ "The goal has to be finding the lowest cost alternative. And therefore the answer is not LNG - it's a way more expensive outcome." - rewiring NZ chief "LNG is not a good option for New Zealand. It's a duress position, a band-aid," - Larry Blair "it would make no economic sense to develop an LNG import terminal to meet just dry year risk as the large fixed costs would be spread over a relatively small amount of output." - Frontier Economics AUTHORISED BY DUNCAN WEBB PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS WELLINGTON
The experts agree, National's proposed liquefied natural gas terminal is a terrible idea. π

I would never have gone onto University, nor earned my degree. reply: I can definitely relate to this! I'm currently doing my masters, I don't think I would've believed in myself to even go to uni without Hagley. Comment: Duncan Webb Labour MP for Christchurch Central Hagley convinced me that I was capable, when four other Schools had me believing that I wasn't. For the neurodivergent in Chch, it shines Comment: Hagley is the only option for some students because of the flexibility offered. Every child deserves an education and we must keep Hagley funded. Comment: Hagley changed my life! it installed a 'yes you can do it.'
These are just a few of the hundreds of messages and comments I've received, all speaking about how much Hagley College has helped students achieve their goals. #NoMoreCuts

19.01.2026 03:28 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0HAGLEY COLLEGE TO LOSE $1M OF FUNDING Letter from Stanford to Duncan Webb: TΓͺnΓ€ koe Duncan Thank you for your letter of 19 November 2025 sharing concerns about the part time student grant on behalf of Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College. I acknowledge the special character of the school and the pressures they may be facing because of the reprioritisation of funding through Budget 2025. While I recognise that the decision to reprioritise this funding may be disappointing, it was not taken lightly. Under the previous model, Hagley College was the only school in the country to qualify for the part time student grant. This will be gradually reduced, with a 1/3 reduction in 2026, 213 in 2027 and no funding in 2028. Funding has now been reinvested in professional development and curriculum resources that support classroom teaching and align with our achievement priority. These include maths and pΓ£ngarau resources, structured literacy and Rangaranga Reo Γ£-TΓ€ resources. I am confident that reprioritisation of this funding will deliver real benefits for all learners. ln your letter, you also mentioned the extra needs of newly arrived refugee children. ln last year's Budget, we invested $45 million to help schools meet the needs of children who are learning English. The Refugee Flexible Funding and ESOL funding rates have not been reprioritised or changed in2025. This year, Hagley College received $103,040 in funding toward initiatives to support refugee students and their families. The school also received two lots of funding for its ESOL programme, totalling $72,500. Staff from the Ministry of Education's Christchurch office have met with Rowan to discuss the implications of the Budget announcement, which covered ways the school could continue to provide services and programmes with reduced resourcing. A wider view, including possible supports for vulnerable youth through Social lnvestment initiatives, was also explored. I understand Rowan has also been in touch with Chaβ¦
I wrote to Erica Stanford about the funding cuts that Hagley College are facing. The school is set to lose the funding for the part-time study grant - which is 10% of the school's entire operational budget.
Her response? Pitiful.
