Ok I know I never rant here and I just don't tend to speak up much about this stuff bc I accept I don't know much about it lol. I just really hope that idiotic companies like openAI don't cause us to miss useful and ethical advancements in technology because we get too scared of them

And thanks to the stupid corporate giants making terrible AI and causing layoffs we also foster some of the same reactionary sentiment as the people saying digital art is "letting the computer do art for you" towards things that have nothing to do with genAI and are simple automation

My take is that the emergence of unethical AI has compounded with our disillusionment with the fact that companies always want higher output & always want to use advances in technology to demand more instead of letting people rest. So we jump on really old tech like procedural generation as a reflex

A lot of problems come from genAI and theft models, but where they are not involved a conveniently placed inhouse model and machine learning will allow me to complain about corporate greed, crunch and layoffs without sounding too socialist about it

Is a program doing your in-between animation frames for you AI? Is a color fill tool AI? Is making a pattern brush that responds to input AI? Lol idk. I just think that a lot of people pull a lot of problems tied to capitalism under AI because that's a less communist word to use I guess

On the other hand it does mean that more things are achievable to people with less resources. Maybe if we do away with large models & make scraping illegal we can start teaching people to get more out of their own work. I mean musicians have used samples forever so why not make your art into samples

Which probably sucks. You get fewer artists and more technicians. You get more people writing algorithms and fewer people making things step by step. Probably an endpoint of massive AAA production economy for games (and movies)

I'm not sure people are exactly aware that many inhouse models are not gpt or massive scrapers... That a lot of people are involved in creating and training them. And I think that this maybe turns art into more tech and creativity into more utility, and maybe it increases output expectations

I always call back to that spiderverse video about how animators created an inhouse model to help them do expression turnarounds faster. Something is lost (maybe creating true masters of animation idk) but also gained (consistency, learning curve) and the internet Approved of it bc it was human work

Mainly my question to a lot of people would be this: if someone is employed and paid, what is the line where you think technology and automation is justifiable and when does it become an issue of making people redundant? Because I see a lot of posts being very contradictory lol

I don't have a point here. I think stuff like the games industry and tech has always blurred a line between utility and art. I also think an average person has no clue about the process of creating large productions like movies, games etc. (I also do not, and I don't understand how the tech works)

I'm personally of the opinion that aesthetic output of AI is just worse than created by humans, and the use of any large scraping models is ethically unjustifiable due to energy cost and theft. The former does not carry the weight of the latter, humanity has always been utilitarian

It's also been problematic to have conversations about "AI" when it's an all encompassing buzzword when procedural generation, machine learning, game enemy behavior etc has always been "AI" bc it's not like you can put a person there to steer npcs or something

Like yeah ok, we are always faced with the perennial problem that making work faster and more efficient keeps putting people out of jobs - but doesn't mean people get to work less for the same effect and the same pay. This is an issue of capitalism that's been there for ages. Increasing expectations

One thing I simply don't understand of internet AI discourse is how many people share stuff like "I don't want AI to do art for me, I want AI to help me to my job faster so I have more time for art" or whatever but then the same people complain when people use AI for automation / faster work
