We need to support each other as much as possible.
Most of us in higher ed in the US are going to lose something over the next four years (opportunities, or funding, or time). But if we believe universities exist, in part, to preserve historical memory and create a space for dissent, our primary job right now is to fight and take the hit.

The Regulatory Standards Bill has been a loaded gun from the start aimed straight at Te Tiriti.
Today, the govt pulled the trigger. Itβs on the Order Paper.
This isnβt just another bill. Itβs part of a calculated assault.

Centrist parties are universally dedicated to this strategy of moving rightward to get more votes that at best does not work and at worst normalizes the right and makes them even more popular.

Thereβs an alt-rightish weirdo sociopath who goes by Vox Day who caught heat like 15 years ago for saying βwe could logistically deport all the foreigners, look what the Nazis achieved with the Jews.β It was seen as transgressive even for performative online assholes.
Now itβs policy.
I'd say there is a balance to be struck between being rightly highly sceptical of the current gen of AI and knowing & understanding it enough to be versant in it.
1. The majority of current AI noise is hype
2. Most of that hype doesn't understand the technology, particularly its limits
3. LLMs ...

Above all, βRotβ reminds us that the Great Hunger was a very modern event, and one shaped by a mind-set that is now again in the ascendant. The poor are the authors of their own misery. The warning signs of impending environmental disaster can be ignored. Gross inequalities are natural, and God-given. The market must be obeyed at all costs. There is only one thing about the Irish famine that now seems truly anachronisticβmillions of refugees were saved because other countries took them in. That, at least, would not happen now.
