This isn't living; it's self-imposed slavery under your own roof because there's no other option. Job opportunities? They're stuck in the '80s, when the minimum wage was enough to live on. Now, the minimum wage is enough for a meal for four people.

Prevent what exactly? The damage is done, the streets are already stained with blood, businesses are closing, and I'm afraid to grow my own business from home because eventually someone from "that group" will call me and demand protection money.

It's terrifying to hear stray bullets hitting the roof of your own house, piercing the roof of your car, shattering the window in front of your computer while you're working. "They really don't care about us," they'll say. They'll say they do, they'll say they're making an effort to prevent it.

Those who know where I live know that my city has been at war for over two years, and today more than ever, hope is fading. It's horrible to see the place where you grew up vanish in smoke, ash, gunpowder, and bullets. Now that threat has spread to much of Mexico as if it were a bad joke.
